And that is a fine prelude to reading the Bad Boy Vibes books. Yes, this will be considered by many to be Chick Lit as there is romance and passion and copious scenes of steamy erotica – all written very well indeed. But the difference is the fact that Irwing’s main characters are bruised by their pasts. Rape - individual and gang rape – play a significant role in this book, but that is not the driver: the point is finding solace and overcoming the past by finding a mate who will have a forgiving and understanding heart.
The synopsis underlines the fleshing out of the first volume of this series - ‘Losing her virginity to such a charming and passionate young man felt like a dream to Anna Simmons. That dream quickly turned to a nightmare when Anna's prince charming suddenly began treating her like nothing more than a prostitute, causing her deep emotional and physical pain. Exposing her to vile situations and demeaning her in the most disgusting of ways, the love of her life was quickly exposed for the devil he was. Anna learned a difficult life lesson from the person she thought cared for her the most- that people are not always who they seem and that those we love the most are sometimes the ones that leave us with the deepest pain. Through the bitter relationships she endured with her stepfather and stepbrother, Anna was forced to the realization that she must take care of herself, by any means possible. Anna soon meets a man who is going through a similar crisis to hers. His kindness and adamancy that she must seek justice for herself gives her the motivation she needs. The genuine care and selflessness of his character helps her to realize a strength in her that she must horn into, in order to seek revenge on those who wronged her. Together, they battle their demons with an "if we go down, we'll go down together" attitude, and find a love they had never known existed. Through all of the heartache and disgust for the experiences they had gone through, they bring each other a calm and peace they had once given up on. Their relationship is unconditional and relentless, giving the notion that soulmates do exist. Heartaches is a story of the thin line between pain and pleasure. Centered around rape, it portrays the emotional and physical damage sexual assault can result in and how love can be more powerful than hate.’
But that fine synopsis leaves out a lot of the twists and turns of this rather disturbing story. Early on we read, ‘She knew it had been her idea to have the fight at all, but now she found she couldn’t stomach it. Not only would Rafe be intimately close with Eric Dayton during their bouts about the ring, but it would surely put Rafe at a disadvantage, what with the present over bright conditions around them. Conditions that would surely remind him of less favorable times. Despite the contradictory start to their day, the heat had set in, and the promise was in the air to turn the muggy start of their day to resemble something closer to what he had been used to in Syria. Syria, where all things bad involving Eric had happened to Rafe. If the tables were turned, Anna couldn’t imagine how she could stomach being that close to Peter Preston, even if it were only to give him the thrashing he so deserved and to be constantly reminded of the exploitation she’d suffered at his hands at that same time. It would only start the old emotional aches back up, invariably weakening her once more. They were both victims—Rafe and Anna. Both abused. Both drugged and raped. The burn for vengeance was there within them both. But was the way forward really through the means of taking a step back? Could they not simply leave their past behind and start anew? Would their past even let them have that choice? Having their enemies merge and descend upon them was too coincidental not to have the sadistic little hands of fate laughing all over it. Lady Destiny had a lot to answer for. But this fight would be out of her hands. Rafe had this. He had to.‘
And there is more – BDSM, psychologically injured people, and the story doesn’t end. There is more to come. H.M. Irwing sculpts a thriller well – and all the while the erotica never stops. Grady Harp, January 18
Rafe is now the one whose nightmares and dreams walk hand in hand, not knowing one from the other. Anna and Rafe, both victims of being drugged and rape, wonder if they can ever leave their past behind them. They burn for justice, but that will not happen because of the red tape of evidence, revenge would taste just a sweet. Their tormentors continue to push and try intimidating them into submission, which is never happening again as they stand together. The bizarre experience of desire and revulsion towards the one that abused them is unexpected and hard to understand for themselves. The bond there is hard to explain.
The second book presents us with big character developments. We are not dealing with an innocent victim that lives in constant fear; now we’re getting a more heroine vibe. Someone that is taking her life back into her own hands and is out looking for justice. It’s quite an interesting read, as we are driven to see all her efforts to heal and how she keeps going up and down, back and forth, in her seek for justice and with her own feelings. It’s a great second part of the story, with more suspense and tension.
This book deals with some heavy, heavy themes and subjects, such as rape, PTSD and psychical dependency and manipulation. There are some uneasy and tough to read passages in here, but you can't avoid that when you choose to write about darker side of romance. Main characters are sympathetic and easy to identify with, and that is great for this type of book. The plot serves its purpose and writing is good enough, and all of that wrapped into one package gave me a novel that is hard to put down. It definitely isn't a light read and it hasn't made me all smiley and bubbly while reading it, but it is definitely worth the price. Not your typical romance novel, in all the good ways, check it out.
