The premise of “Heartless” is very unique and deserves a spot in the Twilight Zone gallery. The first pages draw you in with a scene from a horror movie (the main character is being eaten alive!). It teased my mind and left me begging for more. It was hard to tear myself away from this book.
The main character, Gracen, seems to be deeply troubled. All of her turmoil is spilled on the page. Instead of being repulsed by the things in her mind, it drew me in (I admit to being a little twisted myself). I kept wondering could she really be so tortured.
And just when I thought I couldn’t learn more about this college freshman, the reveals start. When I read the first revelation (about 70% into the book) all the pieces fit together. It was as if the dark clouds parted and everything made sense. The book didn’t leave my hot hands until I read ‘the end’. And OMG it was a mind blow moment.
Martin crafted some wonderful characters. Believe it or not, the protagonist was not on my list of favorites. I liked her, but she was clueless and didn’t operate from the strength hiding within her. But wait…big things are coming up for this character. She will crawl up under your skin and make her home. Be prepared.
My favorite character was Hart (a nice play on words). I loved his maniacal tendencies. Believe it or not he’s the innocent one in this story. My heart went out to him. Read this book and you’ll find out. He’ll become your favorite as well.
Lucien is my second favorite. He was perfectly clueless, but his naivety was totally different. By the end of the book his bravery shone through. Unfortunately, loyalty has its price too.
The real villain in “Heartless” is a serious surprise. It was so unexpected, but it fit. The things the villain says throughout the story make sense. This character has an uncompromising hidden agenda. And when you learn the reason for the anger suppressed by the villain…your mind will be blown.
Anytime a book like “Heartless” mentions Biblical references I start my own research. This time I had to check the names of the characters. Gracen is a female version of Grayson meaning ‘gray-haired’ and ‘God’s blessing’ (keep that one in mind). Lucien means ‘light’ and is also the name of a saint. Seth means ‘placed’ or ‘appointed’. He was the third son of Adam and Eve. Sam is short for Samuel and means ‘God has heard’. Jessup is a variation of Joseph which means ‘Jehovah increases’. Hart is a play on the word ‘heart’. All of this is relevant to the story, and will make sense once you read it.
Finally, Martin wrote some unforgettable lines: “Demon Sunday School,” “How can you run from what’s inside of you?”, and my favorite “History, or what we think about history, is never just the actual events as they occurred. They are facts, and I use that term loosely, as told by someone as told by someone else.” Priceless.
I highly recommend Kelly Martin’s “Heartless”. It will make you think. It might just keep you awake at night.
Graven Sullivan, our main character has really endured some rough stuff her whole life! The dreams this girl has is enough to make anyone want to hunt down some hypnocil! A man named Hart Blackwell is there with her, everytime she sleeps. There to torture her in unimaginable ways!
Gracen has never felt normal and by the end of the story there is good treason for that!
The only bad thing I have say is that the main character seems to ramble a lot about the same thing...it was kinda hard to stick with, but I never quit and I'm glad because I did enjoy the overall story!
Another thing I loved was how Kelly worked classic Bible events into the book without making it preachy. A lot of times, a big downside to Christian Fiction is that it tends to get a bit preachy. Not these books. She takes characters right out of the Bible and they become current in today's world. I loved how she was able to do that and actually make it work!
Let's just say, I'm glad I don't have to wait for book #2.
