This is one of the most difficult reviews that I ever had to write. Because this story did so much to me, it was such an emotional story and I really want to do it justice with my review. But I must confess that I don’t know if I can do that. I don’t know if I can find the right words to honor it. But I will try my best and hope that I can express my emotions into words.
First, I will start by telling you that ‘Heartless’ is one of my FAVORITE books of 2017!!
Secondly…. YES, in this book the main male character does cheat on his wife. But I do hope that some readers will still give this book a try because the story is also about love.
The night that governor Michael Cavanaugh and Blaine Foster met, they didn’t know that that was the beginning of something special, that their lives would never be the same again.
Both are in a relationship when they meet. Michael has been married to his high school sweetheart Veronica for 15 years and Blaine is together with her boyfriend Mateo. Blaine loves Mateo but lately (since he moved in with her) they are having a lot of arguments. Their arguments leave Blaine always sad and frustrated. After another argument, Blaine meets a new customer at her workplace, a customer who tries to get her to smile, something that Blaine is surprised and grateful for.
Michael will never be able to explain why it bothered him so much to see Blaine so distressed that night. Why he wanted to see her smile but he did and at the end of that night Michael got his smile from Blaine. The more they get to know each other, the more both are realizing that something is going on here. But what? Can they give in to it? What about their partners? Is it just lust or is it love?
At one point Michael will have to decide if this chemistry between Blaine and him is worth it all. His marriage, his carrier. Is it just the forbidden that makes him feel so much? Or is he falling in love with Blaine?
First, I want to say that like so many other romance readers I don’t like cheating in my books. But after reading and loving R.C. Martin other books, I decided to trust this writer with the story and I’m really happy that I did. Because yes, the book is about ‘cheating’ but it’s also about ‘love’. And sadly the circumstances and the timing of falling in love with someone can be terrible wrong but that doesn’t make the feeling any less true.
‘Heartless’ is a story about emotional and intelligent conflict, about guilt, about saying goodbye to a future that you once dreamt of but also about passion, desire and love. It’s about being human, about making faults, about hurting people, about having to accept that maybe along the way you changed into another person with different desires and longings.
The story is told from both POV’s which I really appreciated because it gave the story more depth. I liked both characters very much. Michael is an ambitious, dominant man and Blaine is a young woman with a kind heart. The sex scenes were hot and naughty. I love the fact that we got an epilogue at the end. I really needed that.
‘Heartless’ was definitely a story that I didn’t expect from this writer but sometimes those are the best surprises!
Crikey! What on earth did I just go through with this book? A full scale battle would have been less emotionally draining. This author is known for writing books that are emotionally wrought. For weaving a story that is true to the human condition and that at our core none of us is perfect and we’re all prone to tripping whilst on our journey.
Michael is a man of principles and values. A solid love and respect of his extensive family and heritage. He believes in working hard and proving that he is worthy of the trust and faith of the people he works for/on behalf of. He is a compassionate man, battling with a heart aching tragedy in his past. A tragedy that his wife Veronica blocks him from sharing with her, her own pain and heartache is too much for her to bare and she dare not look weak.
Veronica is a woman who has stepped into her role a hundred and ten percent and moves through her day like a military strategist. The cracks in their marriage aren’t on display and nobody, and I mean NOBODY knows they are even there. I liked Michael’s drive, how he was with his family and how he was sexily bilingual.
‘This is how I know that what we have is right. This is how I know that she truly is the great love of my life. I would risk anything for her--I will risk everything for her--and I’ll harbour zero regrets.’
Blaine, a woman of simple means and loyal to a fault. Keeping her father well is top of her priorities, he already has issues with his heart and she loves him beyond description. She is a creature of habit and routine. Her father has always told her that she needs to be true to herself and just be happy. But happy isn’t who she is with her boyfriend Mateo. Blaine lives constantly being forgotten and shoved to the side for Mateo’s other passions. She is a dying ember in the fireplace, late at night. Her life filled me with pain and heartache, why couldn’t I just put her in my pocket and keep her and her heart safe from harm?
‘Is it possible to regret the pain you’re sure to inflict but not regret the actions that caused the pain? How can I regret that kiss? How I can I regret the most incredible moment I’ve ever shared with another human being in my entire life?’
Together, Michael and Blaine scorch the pages, from the moment they met it was clear where this was headed. A love story like no other I have had the pleasure of reading. Unlike most books of this topic, they try to fight the pull and they know what they are doing is wrong and yet their bond is so great they can’t not be together.
‘Her chest heaves against mine, and I got the feeling that she’s struggling for breath as much as I am, but neither one of us pulls away. This kiss is unstoppable, as I knew it would be. No. Not as I knew it would be. More than I imagined it could be. I can’t stop. I’m hooked.’
Heartless is a book that creates conversations and debates. A book that would cause huge discussions in a book group, heartless is a thought provoking, emotional tussle. A book that provokes feelings of joy when part of your mind is screaming that you should be horrified that this isn't righteous behaviour for good decent people. That you're wrong for hoping for this or for that to happen. It's a strong pull of ice cold lemonade on scorching day with an added sour note of not enough sugar added.
This isn't a book for everyone. People make epic mistakes and this book showcases superbly that wrong things done for the right reasons still have fallout and repercussions. It doesn't shy away from the emotional backlash and stomach churning regret and disappointment of these actions.
‘It’s been difficult, but I’d ensure anything for the man who now kneels before me. I also know, simply by the way he holds me, that this hasn’t been easy for him, either. Nothing about our journey has been ideal. He’s here. That’s all that matters.’
This is the kind of book that I wish I could read again for the first time. Taboo is often done in a way where there is an easy way out. A reason why this or that happened. This isn’t the case here. This is the most realistic taboo book I have read in a very long time. Well done Ms Martin, very well done!
