But this is a retelling of a fairy tale. It really isn't original and, frankly, the retelling isn't all that interesting. I only read through it because I paid for it. It was short for a novella. Most novels, in the Kindle app, register at a "location" of at least 3,000 - and usually more. This "novella" had a location of 1076, making it about one-third that length. It struck me as a story only. Just a story - based on another story that is 200 years old.
I've read one of Jeffe Kennedy's other stories, which is why I bought this. It was half this length. It was snappy, interesting, and original. I'd rather read that one ten times in a row before I'd read this one again.
What Kennedy adds to the fairy tale makes the darkness bearable. The story begins with the Prince’s point of view, and the Prince Cavan is the prince we all expect, except with motives and mentality verging on three dimensional. Young Princess Natilde is three-dimensional, and so very unlikeable at first: what kind of a Princess allows her maid to terrorize her out of her throne, and even her name? But she’s not left to be just nebbish Nix, the goose girl. She endures her pain, learns her strengths, and rises to claim her place. Kennedy gets the details right for these royals—details such as education, integrity, faith, and the wisdom to rule—helping the Prince and true Princess to identify their true, magical relationship. And they are blessed by Glorianna in the process.
Saying that, if this IS the first book you've read then ignore it, read Twelve Kingdoms. They're really good and well worth the time and much like me, I'm going to try and pretend I hadn't read this one.
The story will capture you immediately and as you are made aware of things you will be caught some place between horrified and enraged. The story is exceptional and probably a bit more than PG rated, the only failing I have may be my own and that is after reading hundreds of books with strong female characters I have problems relating to the faint-hearted and fearful heroine of this story.
Bottom Line: A story you will remember for a long time, it is told well and delivers the reader into it on an emotional level that is usually not present is shorter works such as this. 4 Stars and maybe more if you can relate to the heroine better than I did .
Cavan, prince and heir to the throne of Erie, was wed via long-distance to Princess Natilde, who has just recently arrived at his castle. He had hoped for a connection, but when he saw her there was none. He feels down and bleak, except when he’s with the servant girl, Nix. The woman formally known as Natilde, now called Nix, is posing as a servant girl in the keep of Princess Natilde.
Heart’s Blood shares the sweet romance between two souls. I enjoyed discovering what put Nix in her predicament and watching Cavan piece together the truth. The two make the perfect pair. Both fair, honest, and just, putting the best interests of others before themselves. Their love filled me with optimism and happiness.
