Review

A Heart's Home, A Novella by Laura J. Marshall is a romantic story set against the backdrop of India. Asyra, a British girl, lives in India with her father after the death of her mother. The story deals with the romance of Asyra and Braddock, how they meet each for the first time and fall in love despite having totally different tastes and interests.

The book is intensely romantic. It is not easy to handle a romantic theme because most of them end up in a cliched manner, making it boring. This book, though short, is powerful and the love shared between Asyra and Braddock is expressed very subtly. It's not the usual cliched romance. Her journey with Braddock to meet his brother (with whom her grandmother has fixed an arranged marriage) and then suddenly falling in love with Braddock is unexpected. The theme of the story shifts completely at that point.

A Heart's Home, A Novella has also multiple messages to the reader. It speaks about how a foreigner feels like an outsider in a different country, a woman's belief in God and the path He chooses for her and an innocent love that blooms between the two characters, making it a poignant love story.

The author Laura J.Marshall has added a kind of longing and passion in this short book through her words. Her handling of the two characters is done with depth and finesse. The cultures of India and England blend well with the theme.

This book hit a special place in my heart. I'd been to India and loved revisiting it through Asyra's eyes. Also, I was born in England, grew up in America, and have lived overseas, so I know what it's like to feel as if you don't belong anywhere. Laura J. Marshall captured that feeling in such a poignant way, as well as the journey toward finding a home in one's faith and in the heart of another. What a beautiful story!

This engaging novella is a beautiful story of a love that blossoms and grows in an atmosphere where it seems unlikely. That’s the way real love is though—it often shows up in the most unexpected places. As you turn the pages, you will find your heart rooting for that kind of love.
Born in England, and raised by her father in India after the death of her mother, Asyra has always felt as though she couldn’t find her place in this world. Now, finding out her grandmother has planned an arranged marriage for her back in England, she feels even more disrupted. Somehow, a trip on the seas that her father had told stories about seemed exciting. On the other hand, how could she be excited when she was about to leave her uncle behind; the only person she had left, the one who could raise her spirits when she was friendless, the one who could make her laugh, the one who had always been enough. Why would she want more?
As the story progresses, Asyra finds herself once again torn between life and her feelings. Does she honor her grandmother? Or does she honor her heart? How can she marry a man simply based on friendship? Would she live the rest of her life feeling as though she couldn’t find her place? Or would she be able to determine her own destiny?
This story spoke to my heart in a way that I didn’t even realize until I sat down to write my review. I guess once again, true love showed up in an unexpected place – the love of my Heavenly Father. It made me consider: How many times have I failed to trust my heart, knowing that God dwells within it, in an attempt to please someone else? How many times have I allowed someone to sway me into forgetting that God formed me into His perfect image and I had no one else to please but Him?

It is India, 1746. Asyra, 19, has just learned that her grandmother, on her mother's side, has arranged her marriage and wants her back in England. (Asyra was taken to India by her father when her mother died giving birth to Asyra so that is the only life she has known. Now her father is also dead.)

The Duke of Fairmont, Braddock Weston, and Mrs. Campbell are to accompany Lady Asyra Cordeir back to England! In Madras the French attack and so Braddock has to somehow protect the two women. How will they all escape?

Although Asyra can speak English she cannot read it so on the voyage home, Braddock gives her reading lessons from her mother's Bible. Is the man she is supposed to marry, Caine, the one that she loves? How does the story end?

This short book does have an ending but the author says at the end there will be two more books in the series :) Look forward to reading them when they come out. The only thing I did not like in the book was at one point Braddock's recovery seemed a little unreal. I know adrenaline is wonderful stuff but even so.... Rest of it was a great read though. Enjoy!

The only thing wrong with this book is it was too short. It's a great little story that keeps the pages turning, or the audio playing. I listened to this in audio form. It helped to make washing dishes a lot more interesting. I love romance and this is a sweet story about two people finding each other. I don't read a lot of historical novels but it seemed just fine to me as far as the time period went. This book was a quick easy listen and I will be looking for more audio books by Laura J. Marshall

A tender and sweet story, A Heart's Home, by Laura Marshall, pulls you right into Asyra's journey as she leaves India and flees to England with her handsome, future brother-in-law. From the beginning, my heart was drawn to Asyra's tale of loss and hope for what's to come. A short read with a beautiful, heartwarming story of love. Definitely a reread.

While traveling, they encounter various surprises and trials and through it all, she struggles to find a place to belong.
