I have read a great deal of poetry in my life, yet this is the first time I have found a volume that touches all the hidden places of my soul. Author Natalie Ducey has that marvelous gift of weaving words that touch those feelings you may have experienced but could never express.
We all see love as such an intensely personal thing, so finding another who has clearly experienced those staggering highs, and shattering lows is a rare and precious thing.
These poems will reach in and touch you, and a heart caught unguarded will be alternatively uplifted and at times moved beyond tears to a place we instinctively recognize as home.
This author has a rare and beautiful spirit that shines through with each graceful and eloquent word that she has penned.
Her words caused me to take a deep breath and pause to reflect on my own journey, I was unprepared for the glimpses into my own behavior, my loves still remaining, and those I have forsaken or lost.
That gift is what this author shares with you in this volume.
If you have ever loved deeply, or are in that first joyous season of new love found, or perhaps reflect back on the ‘if only’ moments life hands us with such abandon, this book will move and touch you.
It would make THE perfect gift to share with someone you can’t imagine living without.
The book comprises of predominantly two types of poems, with the sections entitled Confessions, Eternal love and The Agony of Holding On & The Angst of Letting Go focusing on the best things about love and relationships and the sections entitled Journey of Becoming and the poems that form part of the Peace by Piece Puzzles being about the tides of life.
I enjoyed the poems about love, but I found some of the poems about life to be quite remarkable in their insightfulness.
A verse that remained with me from a poem called The Reckoning was as follows:
“Waves crash the rugged shoreline
Unforgiving in their furry
Relentless in their cause
To break me?
The injustice of it all.”
The poem Mighty Heart brings tears to your eyes with its words of courage and suffering. Once extraordinary verse is:
“Fear shall not cage nor define us
Here we stand on vast, shaky ground
So, let’s never doubt our courage
Dare this voyage …. both noble and proud.”
I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt their heart racing at the sign of another being and enjoys tributes to the nobility and greatness of the human spirit.
"Tears are now my souvenirs
For that perfect day has come and gone."
There are poems on the love of children, of parents, and on the inevitability of time. My favorite poem, titled simply "Time" begins:
Is not an enemy
Of the heart
But a tempest for the mind..."
Well worth the read if you're in the mood for an elegant meditation on the permutations of love.
The author is masterful at using words to express human emotion viscerally. She does not use ambiguous or abstract vocabularies. Her simple wording punches the readers’ guts at times; then, through the pain, the strength finds its way. For personal reasons, I’m especially touched by the piece "Still Me," a poem for those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
This is a book you can revisit over and over. I strongly recommend it to everyone.
Although I enjoy reading poetry I had never read a book of poetry before now. I was inspired to read The Heart’s Lullaby, because I am a member of the Rave Reviews Book Club and many of the club’s members read the book and spoke highly of it.
The theme of this book is love and there are messages of compassion, grief, strength and hope.
I was impressed by the entire collection of poems. While some of the poems made me smile and inspired me, others moved me to tears, and many of the poems struck me with beauty and insight. As I read, I got a sense of honesty and passion in Natalie’s words. However, the overall mood of the collection is soothing and peaceful.
Poet Natalie Ducey used words in new and fascinating ways to create a unique book of poetry that I would gladly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading poetry.
