The Aztec story itself is a bit gory for me, so i was hesitant on even reading this book. However i did anyway out of curiosity. I would not suggest this for a young child maybe more for a young adult, or an adult. On that note i was extremely impressed how the author actually took the time to carefully add in each piece without making it to long and drawn out like some fantasy books, or some with not a lot of information even for a fantasy story. I am glad i bought this however, it did fall a bit shy of my expectations, even though i was able to get into the story and become one with the characters. It didn't hold my attention completely, and usually that happens when it just isn't for me. Also i really couldn't if some parts were based on fact or the authors imagination itself, that was the issue here. With that I have to actually give the book a 4 star, only because it was not for me, great read those for someone wanting a fantasy of the Aztecs the with some fact, like they say every good fantasy story has some factual parts to it so you never really know is it all based on fantasy or fact. We all change tastes and you never know maybe in the future i will end up loving this book, but right now sadly it is not for me.

"The Hearts of Men" is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale genre. - Tangent Online
The proverbial "worth the price of the issue" story is "The Hearts of Men" by T.L. Morganfield, who seems to specialize in a subgenre of her own devising, Aztec mythology. - Black Gate: Adventures in Fantasy Literature

This story reads like a Mexican fairytale, an Aztec myth, written from the point of view of the God involved. Imagine if the New Testament had been written in the first person.
I liked the idea of an old God feeling regretful for his bloodthirsty nature, seeking atonement and trying very hard not to repeat the mistakes of his past and of his young companion's love and faith in him. It doesn't hurt that I'm a sucker for a good redemption story.
My only dislike is that the story is much too short. I liked the main character and wish the author had written a longer, more involved story or at least a series about this characters adventures. He deserves that level of respect.
I really would've liked to give it five stars but just when I was really getting into it, it ended.

I enjoyed how the creation story was interwoven into Western influences. I really enjoyed having the story passed down into the newer generations while honoring the ancient Gods and how one can change despite the idea of fulfilling destiny.

*takes a deep breath* OMG YOU SHOULD TOTALLY GET THIS SHORT STORY! ITS AWESOME MEXTLI IS SUCH AN ADORABLE CHARACTER IN THIS STORY AND YOU WILL END UP WANTING TO GIVE HIM A HUG AT THE END OF THE STORY! ITS BASCIALLY HUITZOLOPOCHTLI IN THE OLD WEST SUCH AN INTERESTING COMBINATION! *takes another breath*
And on a calmer note now now I got my fangirling out of my system, I love the characterization of all the characters, the story is really well written, great pacing and I love the development that Mextli (aka Huitzilopochtli) gotten in the story. One of my favorites of Morganfield's characters!

A great follow-up to the earlier books. The author adds new characters and complexity with each story, and I hardly wait for the next chapters in this story and the clash that must come eventually.

I HAVE READ THREE BOOKS BY THIS AUTHOR. GREAT INFORMATION.

I like this one the best so far out of the Aztec West series. I found Mextli compelling in past books where he appeared, and I really enjoyed getting inside his head a little bit more for this particular book. With the exception of Coyolli, who chose not to change and instead to try to repeat history, all of the characters she has featured in this series have undergone great introspection and have evolved in poignant ways. I think of the characters, Xolotl may still be my favorite, but Mextli still ranks very high up here. I loved the way he evolved, and seeing the relationship between him and the boy, Timacoz. This story actually leaves the reader with a sense of hope for the fate of Mextli and perhaps some of the other Aztec gods who might be more open to change. I'm eager to see where all of this is leading.
