When I first read about this anthology, I have to say I was a little incredulous. Rough, tough, wild, gun toting cowboys, and Valentines! Not a match made in Heaven I didn’t think. How wrong I was.
This is the first book I have read from this new publisher, Prairie Rose Publications, and it certainly won’t be the last. All of the stories are well crafted, and when you look at the credentials of some of the writers you can see why,
Writers for the New York Times, members of the Romance Writers of America, fantasy writers, multi award winning writers , nine of them have got together to make this a delicious collection of tall, brooding heroes, and strong willed women.
Ranging in time from the Old West, to a time just after the Second World War, all of the stories held my attention right through. At no time did I skip a few pages to ‘get to the good bits’!
Some of the many, well-drawn female characters within the pages are - Candy makers, Nuns who used to be something very different, and a young woman pretending to be a male Court judge. Among the hunky heroes are - Ranchers, saloon owners, gun-slingers, stagecoach guards, and of course, lawmen. Many of which set my heart a-fluttering! All of the people have their own very individual characteristics, which come over extremely well in the writing.
There are daring escapes through hidden tunnels, a gang of piglets, old Love Letters, Mail order brides, orphaned children, and runaway coaches plunging over high cliffs. Oh, and don’t forget that Wild West staple, shoot-outs. There are chases, deaths, dances, and, of course, weddings. The whole collection is a breathless gathering of some of the best Western Romance writing I have ever read.
I am not going to tell you if I have a favourite, and that is, honestly, because I don’t think I can pick just one, although, having been raised on a farm, I have always been very fond of piglets!
If you thought all Westerns were written by, and for men, think again! All of these are by, and for, women. As such, although any shooting and violence are handled very realistically, the stories are, on the whole, just a bit ‘softer’ than those written by men.
Don’t delay, read it today, I know you will be as delighted as I was. If you’ve never read a Western before because you think they are too male orientated, do give this collection a chance, you won’t be disappointed. If I could give more than five stars I would.
So, wild gun-toting cowboys, and Valentines? Do they work? You bet your sweet *** they do!
