From Booklist

Those who love myth and legend--and even those who think they don't--will devour this engaging story, which expertly weaves Arthurian legend into a modern setting. Dashing between Chicago, London, and Alyssum, a small island off England's southwest tip, the novel follows the two daughters, Maxine and Olivia, of archaeologist Ben Pike, who is missing and presumably dead. Ben has left a stunning green stone to Max, a Chicago college professor. Olivia, a broke and aging playgirl, joins Max to search for answers to their father's disappearance--and to protect the beautiful stone. Joined by a British half brother they never knew existed, the sisters attempt to return the stone to its home (the Arthurian connection) and to fight a frightening man named Rhys, in whose hands the stone would be used for evil. Brod wisely waits to introduce supernatural plot elements until even hardcore realists will be well and truly hooked. A nice mix of thriller and fantasy genres. Jenny McLarin

". . . a cracking good story. I heartily recommend it."

--Booklist, August 2005 (Booklist 20050801)

"D.C. Brod pens a wondrous tale of legend and fantasy and brings to modern times the tale of King Arthur and Excalibur. Maxine just wants to find out what happened to her father. Her sister Olivia just wants her inheritance. As they come closer to finding out the answers they seek, danger escalates as it becomes increasingly possible that there is more truth to the Arthurian tales than either sister ever believed possible and they find themselves playing a pivotal role in the modern day legend."

"D.C. Brod's writing style reminds this reader of Robert Ludlum books in the many plot lines and various characters, all slowly unraveling the mystery one page at a time, leading to a terrific "battle" at the end of the story."

"The book moves at a breathtaking pace that will keep readers riveted to the page. The many characters are all complex and each holds a pivotal place in the story line. HEARTSTONE is a legend-based thriller that takes on a new life in modern times. A positively marvelous book that fantasy readers will not be able to pass up."

I've read other books by D.C. Brod and found them engaging and intriguing, but Heartstone is atypical: heroine instead of hero and pursuit instead of caper. Equally adept at fantasy and mystery, Brod took me on a wild ride as I followed the characters Maxine and Ben through a Celtic land in search of the stone.

When you find a book that weaves characters you love and plot(s) that keep you on the edge, you have a page-turner, and this book qualifies!

When I got brief glimpses where I thought I knew where it was going, I felt like I'd solved a mystery--had an ah-ha moment.

I can only hope there will be a sequel to Heartstone.

Ben Pike realizes that his murder will put daughter Maxine in a precarious position because he didn't have the time to tell her what she needed to know. He goes to his death believing his daughter will have the inner fortitude and strength to follow the path he laid out for her. When word reaches Max and hers sister Olivia that Ben is missing and presumed dead, Olivia teams up with Nick, Ben's step-son, in England to find the stone that has been in his family for generations.

The stone comes to Maxine upon Ben's instructions along with a book about the Arthurian legend. Rhys Lewis, a psychologist and Nick's uncle, wants the stone and will do whatever it takes to retrieve it because it is from Excalibur and when the stone and the jewel meet unlimited power will be at the disposal of that person. Max is aided by her father's friends in getting to the Island of Alyssum owned by Arthur Penn where she will meet her destiny. The forces of good, in the persons of Arthur and Nick, who confront Rhys, find they have created a strange twist to the Arthurian legend.

Readers who love the King Arthur stories will find this tale a special treat with so many threads of Celtic mythology running through the storyline. Each major player is a symbol of a character from Camelot including Nick who is a descendant of one of King Arthur's knights. Of course there are some modifications made to the actual myths to better set the plot in the present but D.C. Brod is a sparkling fantasist who brings the legend into the present.

Heartstone, eISBN10:1440533547, Tyrus Books, e-version of previous publication by D. C. Brod is a mystery/fantasy/paranormal tale surrounding King Arthur's sword and containing abundant Celtic mythological threads.
Maxine (Max) Pike, is a community college instructor who has been very close to her father, a man who long has pursued the myth of Arthur's sword Excalibur ( Caliburn). He is very close to making an important discovery and asks Max to join him in Great Britain. She finds it inconvenient to meet him and he is murdered before he can provide her with information she needs to combat dangerous complications. We also discover that Ben had information for Nick, his stepson, who is the keeper of an alexandrite that has been passed down to him through many generations. This gem is central to the story and to Max's perilous position as well as the cause for further murderous activity. The plot is a complicated one with many twists that involve Olivia, Max's sister, Nick's mentally overpowering psychotherapist uncle, Rhys Lewis, Arthur Penn, owner of the island of Alyssum, Simon Murdock, a trusted friend of Arthur's, Grey, an older man of Max's acquaintance, and a host of other lesser players in the game.
The author has provided an intriguing read for the many persons who are followers of the Arthurian tale, because it adds a new dimension. The reader who is not particularly enchanted with the myth, however, may find some problems. For the author to present this more complete concentration on the fabric of the myths, character development is not as complete as one would desire and the story sometimes describes action and some plot twists and turns that are a little bit difficult to accept. So, in summary, Heartstone provides a true dichotomy for readers. For followers of the myth - thorough enjoyment. For others - a pleasant read. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.

This is one hell of a read. From the title, I was expecting a yawner romance, a ripped bodice, maybe an understated murder or two. By the time I finished the opening scene, however,I knew I had badly underestimated what is actually a chase/thriller with pacing and wild action that makes The DaVinci Code seem like a day at Grandma's house. The plotting is deft as Brod weaves the excitement and honor of Arthurian legend into modern times. Drawn to the characters, grabbed by the premise, I was hooked. Brod has pulled the sword from the stone with this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed Heartstone. It had several well developed characters and the storyline was exciting from begining to end. The writing is excellent. I was caught up right from the begining. It was Romancing the stone meets Indian Jones but with an compelling and intelligent edge. I felt invested in the characters and there are several which adds more interest in my opinion. All I can say is you won't be dissappointed. Enjoy the ride!

Heartstone by DC Brod is a story that deserves a great deal of attention - especially in recent times. Populated by characters that amuse, inspire, and repel, Heartstone is riveting from the opening paragraph. All throughout, the plot continues to blossom and twist, pulling the characters as well as readers ever deeper - sometimes with a feeling of there being no choice; we and they are in the story's control. Maybe because Brod respects the reader, trusting us with awful subtlety, allowing us to discover twists without laying them out for us to trip over: our understanding and our horror arrive together. At the same time we relate to so many of the well-drawn characters - the pluckiness we wish we had and the vulnerability we easily recognize.
Bigger than a novel, Heartstone is liberally sprinkled with nuggets of pure humanity, wisdom, and sage observation. Brod has crafted a cracking good action tale with an interesting - and possibly unintended consequence - that of prompting the reader to consider the dangers of today's disaffected people and the role of compassion and goodness in keeping those dangers in check.

With Heartstone, Brod has become a favorite author mine and this book joins my list of favorite reads.
I'd highly recommend it.
