From the Author
His mind is sharp; he easily readspeople. He reads me like he sees inside my mind and plucks out my thoughts.
His skin is smoke; it's the only way todescribe it now that I've had some time to look at him. If I knew nothing abouthim and saw him on the street, I would think Hawaiian or Samoan.
He's exotic and his eyes grab you. Blueeyes have never been my thing. And the word "kind" can't be used in conjunctionwith Moon's eyes. They're intense--treacherous--deadly. Then sometimes, when helooks at me, they go steamy hot. The kind of hot that says I want to lick youfrom the bottom to the top and then eat you slowly. So slowly, you won't stopscreaming until you're completely undone.
I'm an ex-cop and will always have acop's heart.
Moon's a criminal and controls a criminalempire. I want him and it's playing havoc with my soul.

Madison Abigail Kinlock (MAK) has been a PI for two years following an off duty injury that ended her Phoenix PD career. She is working a cheating spouse case when she's knocked unconscious and awakens in a bedroom of Phoenix's most notorious crime lord. There's an instant attraction to the dangerous alpha male, but Mak knows that's a line she can never cross. That's until her car is forced off a mountain road and Moon is the only one she can call-the only one she can trust. Because if what she suspects is true, it was a cop that ran her car over the edge and down the cliff, a cop who isn't afraid to kill. And in her world of black and white, blue is turning black, and black is turning grey.
bad guys, and the good guys, there is hot, sizzling romance. It is one of those books that you just hate to see the last page when you get to it.
I was given this book as as arc reader for an honest review.
Madison Abigail Kinlock, known to most as Mak, is a former police officer turned private investigator. She had dreamed of being a cop her whole life, so her career ending shoulder injury 3 years into her dream was a rude awakening. She's not really qualified for much else, and she can't afford to only work part time to finish school. But, a girl's got to eat, so she swallows her pride, and her disdain, and becomes a PI. Due to this decision, she's no longer welcome in her old cop circles. The blue line isn't fond of PIs, as it turns out. She lives in Phoenix, but her parents have retired to Florida, so she really doesn't have anyone anymore. But, she still isn't prepared for the trouble she's about to get into.
Moon controls Arizona's biggest crime organization. He's ruthless, scary, and not in any way "respectable". He's also sexy as hell. They even have classes on him and his organization in the police academy. That's how Mak knows who he is as soon as she sees him in person for the first time. Moon has no living immediate family, and so he treats his people as family. He's good to them, and they're loyal to him. Everyone has their own reasons for becoming who they are, and Moon is no different. But he doesn't use anything about his past to justify his actions. He knows he's a bad guy, and he's made peace with that fact. But, he wants Madison. Badly. And he works to convince her to give him a chance, though they come at the law from opposite ends.
Moon and Mak's chemistry was off the charts hot, and I loved their push-and-pull dynamic. She doesn't understand her reaction to him, as she's always believed him to be a killer and all around bad guy. This book is only told in Mak's point of view, so we don't know much about Moon's inner thoughts unless he decides to share them with her. So there's a lot of frustration on her end about her inability to stop thinking about him, and what that could end up meaning for her, and her life. There was also some brutal violence in the story, and that was often hard to read, even when it was only someone's history being discussed, much less when it was actually happening on the page.
The world created here, while dangerous and violent, is enthralling, and I found myself constantly wanting to know more. Things move quickly, but I was so there for the ride. One of my favorite side characters, Alex Gomez, Moon's right hand man, is the hero of book 2, which is definitely going on my list. It appears the first 5 books of this series are already currently available.
One of the things I loved about Moon and Mak, is that they're always honest with each other. Even when it hurts. Especially then. Moon never hides who he is, he basically just dares her to accept him. She never hides her dislike of many aspects of his life, and has him rethinking some things, and compromising on others. He'll never be a "good guy", but he lives by his own code of ethics, and he sleeps well at night. Mak has to figure out if she's willing to accept that or not. I, as the reader, had to do the same.
I really loved this book, and how it made me think, feel, and question things. It was so much more than I was expecting. Also, discovering the author's own history as a police officer made things even more believable. I definitely recommend this book to romantic suspense lovers, especially those that love a good criminal anti-hero!

Maddison/ Mac fulfilled her ambition as a cop, but had to give it up after a shoulder injury. She’s working as a PI when she meets Chase Moon’s “thugs”, is knocked out & wakes up in his compound. The two are instantly attracted to each other, but Mac knows Moon’s reputation: he’s against everything she stands for. He’s got his fingers in drugs, guns & prostitution, & he’s been suspected of making people disappear.
Mac is all about surviving dad by day, while Moon has made his millions through criminal activity & has cash to spare. She’s all alone, surviving on instinct & skill; he’s got his bodyguards & security guards. She’s all about doing things by the law; he’s not against using force & taking the law into his own hands. She should completely avoid Moon, but she can’t help but be drawn to him.
It is to the author’s credit that the reader roots for Moon even though he is against the law & is not a nice person. We are reminded of this on numerous occasions, but like Mac, it is so easy to forget because Moon isn’t nasty. He cares for the people he loves & is protective of them. I also liked Alex/ Gomez & I’m happy to learn his story is the next book in the series.
There are a couple of predictable parts. Although I didn’t predict what would happen to Theresa & Philip, I did know that Mac was walking into a trap both times. Likewise, I didn’t trust one of Moon’s people. I forgot the goat, so it was nice Ms Roberts mentioned it at the end! A well deserved 4* (sorry, can’t be loving a criminal, even one as hunky & protective as Moon).
I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. Plenty of action and steamy moments. I may be married but I want my very own MOON 😂😂
I wish there were more books to read about Moon and Mak but until then I will enjoy reading the rest of the stand alone series.
Enjoyable, good story told well, and great main characters
The story is well written with an energized paced that makes it difficult to put down. An excellent read. Can't wait to read more from this author.
