I've had a lot of good, bad, and everything in between when it comes to text books. This book is by far one of the best if not the best I have owned.

Reading it makes you feel like the author is sitting down and talking with you, from simple concepts to complex derivations. It can get very technical for all the people that like to read between the lines and learn the complex theory and proofs, but at the same time it has many examples and applicable information as well if you like to skip the complex jargon and get to solving problems.

This is one of the few engineering text books I have actually completed all the reading for the course. I liked it so much, I read chapters we didn't even study.

It can be used for an introductory heat transfer course as well as an advanced course. They actually layout which chapters would cover different types of courses. Usually we would read the first half of a chapter and then the very advanced stuff would come in for Masters students or motivated type.

It also makes a lot of use out of the software program EES with actual examples. It would be very difficult to solve some of the complex problems without a simultaneous equation solver such as EES, especially problems that require iteration (LMTD problems for heat exchangers). They also do a good job of solving hand-written problems with step-by-step instructions (No, "how did they get that number?" issues for me).

Anyway, I highly recommend this book. I plan on buying their Thermodynamics text book when it is released since my old book was horrific. Also, the book looks like the Bible or something really important. Just a plain front and kind of short and fat, it will look good on your bookshelf.

This book is definitely the best textbook I have seen to date in heat transfer (Keep in mind that I have read books from Bejan, Cengel, Incropera, and Holaman). This review is intended to correct (in my opinion) an inaccurate statement made by one of the reviewers about this book:
I respect your opinion about the book not having enough real life examples, but come on..., we know that your statement is not valid at all. This book has the MOST real life examples in one textbooks and if you run into a heat transfer problem , chances that you will see an example that EXACTLY fits that problem is pretty high. How do you define real life examples? And what is your definition of it is important. Perhaps you were seeking for examples in another subject and could not find it? So don't blame it on this book. Also anyone who says the software used in the textbook is all EES and so forth... Have you ever paid some attention to computer programming as an engineer? I mean again ,,, come on, If you read a code for one specific software, you should be able to apply that to any software of your choice. It's really that simple. Plus I strongly believe that having the code not only helps you with the coding of it necessarily, but it helps you think logical through the problem statement and the solution provided by that assignment.
In the end, I strongly recommend this book and I hope to see this textbook in all universities across the nation pretty soon. The only in depth analysis of a subject in engineering...

It's a very good heat transfer textbook. It's well written, readable, and very through. It can be pretty dense. It has a *lot* of good worked example problems and examples of how to use software packages like EES, Maple, and Matlab. The software examples are helpful especially because they show how to work all the way through tricky problems, not just details of how to use specific commands.

Nellis and Klein write a wonderfully flexible book. Totally appropriate for a graduate level heat transfer book, yet simple enough for undergrads. Each topic is introduced in manner that is readable and understandable, then the finer points are investigated in as much detail as the reader may want.

The mathematics are very well described. While many other books assume prerequisite mathematics courses, Nellis and Klein revisit the mathematics from a very applied perspective.

It references the software package EES frequently, and the EES code interspersed in the example problems is a bit distracting to me, but with practice it can be overlooked.

The best Heat Transfer book you can find. It clearly explains the fundamentals of Conduction, Convection and Radiation. That being said, you need a very good professor to really explain the material to you if you want to clearly understand even the very basics of the material content. Luckily for me, I received my lecture form the Author himself.

I advice you, if u r an undergrad, to buy this book after reading incropera(the conduction part), nellis and klein did a good job, but conduction it was more math than insights and incropera is quite the oposite, so after a first contact with conduction this book allow you to go further. Convection is well explained here, good insights, math is nicely exposed, i like lienhard's book, this one is better tho. Radiation i think incropera is more like a first course, this one is really good, but just like conduction i think you should have an introductory test(incropera is IMO the best book for that), after you get this intro you can move to nellis and klein easily. The authors did great, the book is awesome. Lets say bejan book is the best on convection, this book is not as deep as bejan but as good as, say the best book on conduction to be arpaci, this book gets closer to it. That said, if you are looking for a first course i suggest you to get incropera first, if not just buy this one! Thats the best choice for sure
