“A surprisingly maximalist portrait of a life.” ―New York Times Book Review
The 52 micro-memoirs in genre-defying Heating & Cooling offer bright glimpses into a richly lived life, combining the compression of poetry with the truth-telling of nonfiction into one heartfelt, celebratory book. Alternatingly wistful and wry, ranging from childhood recollections to quirky cultural observations, these micro-memoirs build on one another to shape a life from unexpectedly illuminating moments.

Review
― Richard Russo
"Varying in length from a single sentence to several pages, the essays in [Heating & Cooling] are told with wry self-awareness and compassion."
― Poets & Writers
"Consistently entertaining…always poised, eloquent, and full of moments of tenderness."
― Electric Literature
"Wise, irreverent, funny.…Everyone should read this book."
― Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Whether you call these pieces poetry or memoir, they showcase Fennelly’s signature freshness and candor.… This collection will invite you into the delicate balance between the challenging, sometimes squalid, human condition and the beauty and sadness of the transcendent."
― The Rumpus
"A rich, varied, and refreshingly unpredictable portrait of a woman in her prime.… Readers, you are in for a hootenanny of a wild ride. This is Fennelly at her most laid-bare, wickedly funny, and irrepressibly poetic best."
― The Kenyon Review
"Part of the fun of reading Heating & Cooling is watching Fennelly play with language, making every word count, all while digging into the heart of things.… This tiny book packs many mighty punches as Fennelly takes on Catholicism, cancer, marriage, motherhood, and mortality."
― Clarion Ledger
"[Fennelly] has an eye for the absurd, for those telling, little moments that make up a life and build memories. Some are humorous, some are moving. Others are heartbreaking."
― Florida Weekly
"Fennelly packs a lot into each short piece, with some lighter in subject matter and others with a sudden punch-in-the-gut feel, weighted with existential exploration. Potent despite their brevity."
― Library Journal (starred review)
"An author of bold perception, powerful femininity, and candid vulnerability. This deceptively slim, convention-defying collection delivers unerringly generous rewards."
― Booklist

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2024The title says it all, really. Fennelly writes about a bunch of things and people in her life, and the pieces might be a few pages or just a single sentence. They are unexpectedly compelling and entertaining; she has the ability to hone in on what can truly hook the reader about a person, a place, a situation. A few of these little pieces are breathtaking in their insight - maybe the brevity is what makes it hit so hard. Her skill in this is probably because she is a poet – as a matter of fact the poet laureate of Mississippi.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020The range of emotion captured in the shortest of memoirs is the most memorable. The ability of two sentences to stop me and make me ponder and feel deeply is not to be missed. It’s funny, sad, and wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2024What I like about Heating & Cooling. 1) Title is a tease. Book is not about HVAC. 2) Cover is outrageously funny: a Popsicle stick with one bite remaining to be scarfed up. 3) As the back cover indicates, "All essays are told with wry self-awareness ..." 4) The essays are the kind that make me think "I could have written that" before I answer myself: "No, I could not have written that."
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2017I loved this book. A true genre-breaker, Heating and Cooling is both poetry and prose and unbelievably powerful. Like the cover hints, this is delectable food that you can't stop devouring from the moment you open it up. Fennelly artfully incorporates so much imagery and emotion into each word that a whole lifetime is captured in a single of her 52 micro-memoirs. She's witty, somber and uncompromisingly real. You will know her intimately through her stories -- as a writer, a lover, a sister and daughter, a mother and a wife. And I challenge anyone to look at safety scissors or cysts in the same way again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2018I enjoyed this book, I really did. However, I didn't love it. The short stories were enjoyable. I think the challenge for me was that they jumped all over the place and I couldn't pull out a theme or a story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2018Fennelly shares 52 flashes of memory that has extraordinary meaning to her and forms a word picture of who she is as an American human being. While reading I imagined Fennelly digging deep to show the underlying mystery, drama, humor, frustration, and love that made her take pause, breathe in the moment of memory and make meaning out of it, then honor that slice of life by placing it on the blank page for me to see.
I have read this collection of micro-memoirs several times and each time I found her to be joyous in her writing. She is in love with words. She has the skill to script a memorable experience that engages me. What a great ride! That’s a good thing, otherwise, she may as well be knitting or bartending.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2019This collection proved funny, irreverent, and deeply personal with beau coup laugh-out-loud vignettes. As with many honest writers, she burnishes our commonality, then brings us back around to what makes us all unique. Thank you, Beth Ann Fennelly, for sharing your flash essays.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2017Each page is a surprising and lovely glimpse into daily life of marriage, parenthood, and work from the eyes of this remarkable author. I have never read a book of micro-memoirs before and I loved it! I could not put it down - whether it was the subject matter or the writing style, it was a beautiful read. My teenage daughter happened to pick it up as well and was pulled right in; it is a rare occasion that my daughter and I enjoy the same book. I look forward to future books from this author.

Book was in good condition and as described. It arrived promptly, within the timescale stated. Very happy with my purchase, would recommend this seller.
Helen BarnesReviewed in the United Kingdom on February 2, 20204.0 out of 5 stars Vivid fragments from life
Recommended at a recent writing workshop. I was initially sceptical, some of it seemed very slight. But much more than the sum of its parts.
Lisa PayneReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 26, 20173.0 out of 5 stars Memoir for the flash fiction age
I liked the book. I wanted to love it the way I love some of Beth Ann Fennelly's longer essays, but I didn't. I'm interested in the idea of micro-memoir, but this felt like when your favourite biscuit is made in a small size. It hits all the flavour notes, but doesn't completely satisfy.
