Hutchins grabs you at the get go and runs away on this twisted journey. This is the first book I've read of Hutchins and I am already getting more~
Good plot movement, fun, quirky characters, interesting love scenes, and a hopeful outcome for Emily Bernal, who is herself a lost child, with a failed marriage and loss of her job in Dallas. She is living again with her mother in Amarillo and everything is a set back to her past for which she just wants to forget.
Emily Bernal first met Jack Holden at the bar at a wedding while she was trying to get away from her Mother, Agatha Phelps. Emily had a job in Dallas and was ready to go back; but Agatha kept trying to get her a job in town so she would stay. However, Emily had some problems. First, her husband left her for a man and second, she was pregnant. She hadn’t told anyone about the latter and it seems everyone knew the former information. All she wanted was to be left alone.
Jack followed her outside and asked her if she really was looking for a job. If she was, he was in need of an assistant in his law office here in town. He certainly didn’t look like a lawyer; but did a great cowboy imitation. The problem was she worked employment law and he was in criminal defense.
As they were talking, a man was killed by a Mexican woman right in front of them. Why did she choose that time to kill him? Why did she shoot? The next day, Emily applies for the assistant position at Williams and Associate not knowing Jack Holden had taken over for Williams. When he told her he had Sonia Perez’s case and that she was the single mother of a six-year-old girl who couldn’t be found, Emily took the job.
Can they help Sonia and find her daughter? Why did she kill that man?
Trust me, you don’t want to start this book until you have time to read it all the way through. You will not be able to put it down! This is the author’s best book yet!
There is laughter. There are tears. There are thought-provoking, poignant moments, there is grief. There is poofy bleached blonde hair. I just can't believe she went through the entire book and didn't have one character say, "Bless her heart"! Smile!!
