Good plot movement, fun, quirky characters, interesting love scenes, and a hopeful outcome for Emily Bernal, who is herself a lost child, with a failed marriage and loss of her job in Dallas. She is living again with her mother in Amarillo and everything is a set back to her past for which she just wants to forget.
The heroine is more believable, to me, than some of the tougher than nails women in fiction. She does not seem to tempt providence by rushing into danger all by herself. In my European mind, she must have been a bit of a tomboy earlier, as she is a proficient barrel racer, has won prizes and seems to know how to shoot, all of which helps her escape the baddies . She faces various private worries, like being pregnant by her cheating husband who seems to have taken all their money before leaving . There are good guys and bad guys, some surprises and there is a possible new significant other in her future.
One of the things that added depth to the characters was the inclusion of religion and spirituality. As far as I could tell this book was not labeled "Christian" (and some Christians may not like the references to Native American religion) but religion was an important factor, both positive and negative, in the characters' lives. It seemed very true-to-life for a small Texas city. It was also refreshing to find a "clean" love story that was this well-written. If I am not making it clear, this book was not perfect (4-1/2 stars, because it did not completely stand alone) but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am looking forward to buying the other books in the series.
