Hayden has been living a lie since leaving high school. She has been living with her jock boyfriend, Bobby Joe. At high school Bobby Joe was the school's star football player; after school that didn't transform into a college scholarship or professional career. Bobby Joe is a has been drunk who has turned abusive. Hayden has done all the dirty jobs to bring in money. She is hiding money and planning to run. The final straw is when Bobby Joe comes in drunk and tells her he found her money and Hayden fights back. She runs into the night wearing nothing but an oversized t-shirt and hides in the trailer of a big rig.
Austin stops for a meal and watches as Hayden steals his 'lucky' jacket from where he had left it on one of the rails of the trailer. There begins a long ride home to the Compass Ranch and Austin and Hayden's relationship.
I am a fan of Jayne Rylon's and Mari Carr's books, and I have read the original Compass Brothers and the subsequent Compass Girls, so I had high hopes that I would enjoy this story. I don't think it's necessary to read the previous books, but I'm glad that I did, because there are terrific character back stories.
Austin Compton tries to find a way to be involved in his family-run business. He drops out of college, and convinces his family to support him in driving a big rig, making runs for the business. Unbeknownst to Austin, he picks up a stowaway at one of his stops. Hayden is a woman who is down on her luck. She ran from her abusive boyfriend and found shelter in Austin's trailer. Hayden is freezing, hungry, dirty, and frightened when Austin finds her a day later. He decides to help Hayden, and convinces her to stay with him. When they reach Austin's home, Hayden has a chance to return his kindness. I enjoyed the interaction between the two characters and the relationship they develop. There are several obstacles on the way to true love, and I shed a few tears while reading.
This book has everything: love, romance, angst, laughter, tears, and a villain. The sex scenes were written beautifully - equally hot and emotional. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I can't wait for the next 3 Compass Boys books.
