The Swedenborg Foundation has done handsomely by its eponymous visionary with this first volume in a new 25 part set of translations for his of his work. They have begun with a fine new translation of Emmanuel Swedenborg's most famous work, a description of the many heavens and hells that make up the great 18th-century thinker's cosmology, at once perfectly logical and perfectly eccentric. Swedenborg's afterworld is a kind of reflection and amplification of our own, and his vision of moving and active collective of heavens, occupied by the very real blessed dead, has been a tremendous influence on Goethe, Emerson, and Jorge Luis Borges, among many others. Dole's translation has the clarity and simplicity of Swedenborg's Latin, and the notes and supplementary material are wonderfully balanced and informative. Highly recommended.

These are all taken from his recollections of his many visits there, given to him spontaneously in his late 50's. He didn't 'need' the fame; he was already well known as the King of Sweden's metallurgist, and had that kind of renaissance mind that one rarely sees today. I could not catch him out in any inconsistencies-he lays it all out as if it were a scientific treatise. If you want to know what awaits you, and the qualities of your soul which will determine your final abode, I HIGHLY recommend you read this book, and study it.
For the modern readership, you will find a labored, and often repetitive, phraseology turning every page along the lines of, “…the Divine that goes forth from the Lord is the good of love and the truth of faith, the angels are angels and are heaven in the measure in which they receive good and truth from the Lord,” just to quote a random selection.
I remain indifferent, but it’s cauliflower on a meat-lovers plate.
I give this 3 stars because:
1 - The printing is to small;
2 - The book doesn't have introduction neither biography about the author, and neither comments of how or why he wrote this book, or at list a brief description of how he got to describe what he does in this book.
3 - It doesn't have an index that mention titles for chapters, neither topics or at least a description of a chapter.
The content of the book is good, but not that easy to understand certain things, some has to do with the printing being so small that it's eat to confuse and read again the same line.
To a spiritual seeker who is not willing to settle for merely routine, run-of-the-mill church teachings that are very flimsily based on dubious interpretations of a few relevant scriptures, I highly recommend Emanuel Swedenborg's brilliant writings. They can make a difference in one's life -- a difference, I believe, for the better.
