I was transported into a time in my country's history that I had known of and studied, but hadn't "lived" as now I feel I have.
This is a story of the antebellum era through the reconstruction, as it was lived by three generations of two great families, one from the North, and the other from the South. It begins and ends showing how we are all so affected by those ancestors who came before us, and how we will have influence over the future of our own generations to come.
Many nights after the days reading, I spent sorting through the story line of the characters and how our country's history was evidenced through them.
There were many sections which made me cringe, some that made we want to cry, and some that comforted, but always had me thinking.
It was a highly satisfying read for anyone who likes to find depth on many levels. I highly recommend.
The mixed: Some far fetched plot twists, a very repeatable plot structure where everything goes wrong in the middle and is redeemed at the end of each book.
The bad: How many vindictive characters can you have? Slavery, the civil war and reconstruction were bad enough without need for a significant portion of characters just focused on revenge most of the time - a useful literary device to add suspense, but I felt overused in this series.
In sum: Very solid piece of work well worth reading if you like history and can spare the time. For pure entertainement, other books may be better fit. Hats off to Jakes for this trilogy.
