In Heaven's Shadow (Citizen Soldier) Paperback – May 3, 2013
"... In Matthew Bryan's dark tale, Warrior Angels-the As'rai (not to be confused with the aquatic fairies)-are God's soldiers on Earth; they're here to protect mankind as best they can from the evil that seeps out from Hell in the form of demons clever and downright terrifying. It's a delicate balance, because he never forgets the idea of Free Will in Mankind..." Amy Marshall

"Someone has taken over Hell from Samael? Who would dare? Or have the
power? He was from the first rank of Arch-Angels before he was thrown from
Heaven for his sins." As'hame finally said.
"I haven't been able to figure that out yet. She came out of nowhere
and threw him down and chained him and his first generals. She now rules."
"What? She? Hell is now ruled by a female demon?"
"Yes. She calls herself Kalia, and if anything she's even harsher than
Samael ever was. He was pushed into a role he never wanted. She chose this
and seems to delight in the punishment of others ..." Mkai's eyes darted to
He returned his gaze to As'hame. "And that's the second thing I
was able to discover. It's the catalyst prompting me to seek you out." he said
quietly. "She's not just tormenting the lost souls, punishing them for their sins.
She's torturing souls with the express purpose of conversion. She's recruiting
an army. An army of not demons, but the souls of the damned."
"An army? An army of the damned, but why? What could she possibly
... " As'hame trailed off as his mind fastened on the only reason possible.
"That's right." Mkai said filling the silence, "She's building an army
to wage war on God. She is planning on picking up where Samael failed.
She is going to storm Heaven with an army of God's favorites, with the belief
He won't destroy them."

This book is a little different than others I have read. You have angels. fallen angels. demons, humans and so much more. It is a book packed full of battles and you really have to look deep inside to see that not everyone branded as evil is. I had figured out who the son of God was easy enough as there is plenty of signs. However that is just half the story. When faced with the truth he does take it pretty well and digs deep. For me one show stealer f the book is M'Kai. He is a demon which you figure would just make him a bad guy but he is not. He to me really has a great heart and shows lots of courage standing with the side of good. I will say it did start off a little confusing at first for me but once it took off I couldn't put it down. I had to see what would happen next. If you want an action packed book full of love, hope and even evil give this one a try.
The flow of the book does an outstanding job of keeping the reader begging for the next chapter as the As'rai, M'kai and Rie search for their charge in the city of Los Angeles. The characters are developed so well that you WANT to know more about them and are rooting for each of them, biting your fingernails during every fight scene in the hopes that they survive.
This was an outstanding effort by a first-time author and I can't wait to read the next installment in the Citizen Soldier series!
Hell has a new boss, and she's meaner and uglier than the original one. Hell's new ruler plans to storm Heaven using the souls of the damned as foot soldiers.
M'Kai, a demon who never really got into the job, decides to risk his life to stop her. He joins forces with a band of exiled angels designated to protect mankind. This novel is full of great fight scenes, scary monsters, and tough as nails warriors. It's a very exciting story.
M'Kai's bravery and selflessness are heartwarming and thought provoking. Aside from M'Kai, the novel is full of lovable characters. The world building is interesting and unique.
In Heaven's Shadow is first in a series, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the story unfold.
As a fan of fantasy and sci-fi, I'm always willing to give any new stories a chance to winnow their way into my heart (and collection), but rarely do I find such a jewel from an author new to the public stage.
Matthew Bryan has done an excellent job weaving together our world and the next, presenting a rich story of love, sacrifice, light and dark...and the dark is indeed inky.
He takes us on a firsthand tour of the powerful and polarizing subject of Angels, Demons and salvation, and leaves room for everyone at the table. This tale will reach out with whispers...and have you enraptured by the end of the first chapter.
"In Heaven's Shadow" is exactly what fantasy fiction readers search for, and left me in desperate need for the next volume. I will be first in line for whatever he reveals to us next!
I cannot wait for the next books in the series. Matthew is definitely an up and coming new author that everyone should read.
