After nearly 50 years of using the original collars with the tightening turn lever and more lately the flimsy / awkward spring clamps, I am over joyed to have found the Lock Jaw Collars. I've got arthritis in the thumb joints; just squeezing a tube of toothpaste is painful hence the spring clamp collars were a killer. The Lock Jaw Collars have made changing weight significantly easier and faster, and they hold the weight securely. Working out is once again pleasant. I hope whoever patented this product makes a fortune.
At the maximum opening, they were very snug and only managed to slide on to the standard 1" bar. I was expecting them to be much more loose when open to allow for easy removal. Trying to close them the first time was quite difficult. When I did I saw the metal pins bent and the plastic twisted to one side. I tested it out a bit. It was sturdy and did the job. When I opened the clamps again I saw that the pins were perfectly straight. So I figured this was normal operation despite all these issues. Still I had to wonder about the reviews that called it great for people with carpal tunnel since opening and closing was quite stiff.
The first time I attempted to do a full workout with these things one broke while trying to close the clamp. The pin directly below the tab pulled through the 1/4" of plastic that was holding it back. This was the weakest point in the construction of this item and consequently where it failed.
The design flaw was not making this smaller part, under the same strain as the rest of the product, out of a more durable material.
Product failure was due to extra stress placed on the product due to my ignorance. Since this review I've bought and built some new equipment and it turns out what I thought was an old school standard 1" bar was slightly thicker than 1". All standard weights, clamps, ect did fit on the old bar so I was none the wiser until I bought a new bar (needed one longer). The clamp fit the new bar perfectly and I'll probably be purchasing a few more pairs soon.
However, if you were going to buy these for a threaded set I strongly recommend this quick and easy fix to keep the weights and lock on the bar. Just get some athletic tape (the kind used for baseball bats and hand wraps) and wrap it around the threads for a better grip. Too much tape and it will be too thick to lock the collars and if you don't tape them there is only a certain amount of weight the collars can hold before they slip off. Taping the threads eliminates that issue especially since you will never be using those thread locks again anyway.
I bought 2 sets for my dumbbells and I plan to purchase 2 more for my long and e-z curl bars. 5 stars.
