Editorial Reviews

2013 album from former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and his new band. The album is the first Newsted release to feature Staind guitarist Mike Mushok, who joined the band after the recording of the first Newsted EP, Metal. Although Newsted left Metallica in 2001 and has worked on other projects, this is his first release under his own name.

This album is a breath of fresh air. There is no pretense to this album other than Heavy. It delivers this in a very big way. There are songs from essentially every genre of Metal. Thrash, Progressive, Speed and Power Metal form a very well rounded first effort. While every so often one hears things that are reminiscent of his former band Metallica, it is entirely and completely Newsted. You can tell time was taken in the songwriting process, in that every song is as tight as possible, and the sound of the album is focused consistent and clean. While the bass is very much the forefront of the Newsted sound, it is not overbearing or at the sacrifice of any other parts. This is what makes this album so great. You can hear clearly the driving force of the music. If no other Metal album comes out this year, or if there is a glut of them this will be the album of the year for me. Regular rotation in my household.

There is nothing more to say than this album delivers exactly what it says it is. Heavy Metal Music. I would also add the word Integrity. Jason kicks much ass on this album. Looking forward to more!

Jason started a new chapter of his musical career when he released the "Metal" EP a few months ago under the band name Newsted. The four songs on that EP were a perfect sampler of what Jason's first full-length album would hold. This CD is comprised of eleven songs that could all be described as basic heavy metal, with music similar to old-school, Motorhead-inspired speed metal, some groove-heavy riffs that sound like the better-sounding parts of Load, Re-Load-era Metallica, and some Testament-style thrash, but more simple. For music like this to appeal to me, which Jason has openly stated is meant to be basic, it needs to get my head banging, or my foot stomping, or my fist pumping. Newsted gets it done on most of these songs. The riffs aren't complicated, but they're powerful and have a good, heavy groove. I might complain about the solos, which mostly sound like Load-style hard rock solos, or the drums, which are nothing to get excited about. Then again, these songs are simple enough that a Gene Hoglan-caliber drummer might not sound right with the music.

The two big highlights of the album for me are Soldierhead and Long Time Dead. Those are the two that have the most speed metal influence, and where Newsted seems to have its most potency. Soldierhead was on the "Metal" EP, and was the first song Jason released with this band. It's the album's fastest, most thrashy track. Long Time Dead has some infectious vocal lines during the verses and a great upbeat Motorhead bounce. On the down side, I don't see much going for As the Crow Flies or Above All, which are both slow to mid-paced, generic, and kind of forgettable. The main riff in Above All gives the word basic a whole new meaning. All of the other songs hit the four-star mark for me.

This has been one of my most anticipated albums of the summer for me. I really liked the Metal EP and this continues very much in the vein of that ep with 11 tracks on the standard full length version of this album. two of the songs are from the Metal EP (soldierhead and King of The UnderDogs) so they will are great to hear again, but the new tracks are excellent from top to bottom. Mike Mushok from Staind plays his guitar very well on all the tracks, and displays that he is more than what he was limited to in Staind. Very much an "old school" guitar, drum, bass sound. For me, it is tough to pick a favorite song because all of them have catchy riffs and parts of each that just really resonate for me. each song clocks in between 4 to 6 minutes (shortest being 4 minutes with ampossible, longest being nocturnus at just over 6 minutes). With songs of this length, Newsted is able to change paces several times and if you don't care for a part, wait a minute, and the next section may be really good. This has a lot of tones of his voivod work present in it, so fans of voivod may like this also. I highly recommend it to fans of good hardrock/metal/thrash.

I have personally purchased 2 versions of this album, but there are several versions out there. Amazon USA offers from what I can see only the standard 11 track cd and vinyl, but there is also the version I just purchased through amazon UK that offers the 11 tracks plus the bonus track "spiderbiter" and then the other two metal ep songs "skyscraper" and "godsnake" as tracks 12, 13, and 14 respectively. This version includes the "making of heavy metal music" documentary dvd. The other version I purchased was from i-tunes featuring the bonus track "The Differents" as track 12. There is also the 2 vinyl version with 11tracks and possibly the CD, and a 12 track 2 vinyl version that comes with a CD that appears to be europe only and features the track "spiderbiter" also.

I just got done listening to this great album for the 4th time and it gets better after every listen. I have been a Jason Newsted fan since his beginning in Metallica in 1986 and I'm very happy that he is back to what he does best, play thundering heavy metal music. I can't wait to see them live. If you love heavy metal, then get this album right away. this album has everything you want in a metal album. I will say it again, thank you Newsted you have been away for too long, we are all glad you are back to crush our skulls with your metal.
