Editorial Reviews

SIX WORLD PREMIERE RECORDINGS! The music of Russian and Soviet Jewish composers remains largely unknown. The Stalinist program of Socialist Realism was brutally enforced resulting the deaths and imprisonment of many of many artists and composers. It has been the goal of pianist and musicologist Jascha Nemstov to rescuer this precious legacy and presents it to listeners once again. Following the enormously successful disc, Tabea Zimmermann Plays Jewish Chamber Music (HAN 93008), Nemstov turns to that quintessential instrument of the Jewish Soul – the Violin. In this recital of heart-breaking beauty, Tuban and Nemstov have produced an invaluable document of Jewish culture that demands to be heard!

Nemtsov is doing a survey of the New Jewish School from the 1920s. The composers are undeservedly obscure. Alexander Weprik, Lazare Saminsky, Joel Engel, Alexander Krejn, and Joseph Achron wrote brilliant music. All the pieces are superbly played. There is much overlap with Hebrew Melodies by Elman. Both sets are worth having. Elman is more in the Klezmer string style while Turban and Nemtsov are in the classical style. The music has its roots in both.
