There are so many reasons I loved this book - the prose is utterly beautiful and the author somehow manages to draw the reader into her own mother and grandmother's experiences as if she had lived them herself.
This is the true story of a little girl and her mother in post WWII Japan as they retreat to a mountain sanctuary in search of peace and healing. The mother gently teaches her daughter powerful life lessons that touched me deeply as a grown woman in a completely different era. The descriptions of little Mimi's interaction with - and great respect for - nature were transformative for me.
I have read a lot of memoirs over the years and this is one of my absolute favorites, not only for the gorgeous writing, but also because I finished the book feeling uplifted, inspired, and grateful.
Though I read this on my own, it would be ideal for a book club, because it's one of those books you really want to talk about. Truly exceptional.
