This is quite possibly the first story in this genre that I've read where I found myself disagreeing with almost every decision the main character (Kate) made - I wanted to reach into the pages and smack some sense into her. This is not some cookie-cutter story sandwiched in-between gratuitous sex scenes. This story is unusual and each chapter makes you change your mind about each character, only to have your mind changed again and again as you read further.
I will definitely recommend it to my friends and can't wait for the next book!
Kate Champion, a forty-two-year-old, married mother of two, leads an enviable upper class life of luxury. Jaylee Inoa is a twenty-two-year-old, second generation New York Dominican with close ties to the Heights and the gangs that run them. A very unlikely union is set up. In MY opinion Kate doesn't recognize that her heart is with Jaylee. His love, trust, and most importantly the ways he can see their future is pivotal to my love for him. Kate gets caught up in him, there is a connection, she does things she never would have done before. Her husband Robert (whom I hate with all my heart) is a lawyer. It doesnt take me long to see that all he wants is to win.
Being a New Yorker born and raised I loved reading the scenery. I am so biased when it comes to New York based books. I enjoy the landmarks and the expressive people. There was one character Sarah, who was Kate's college friend who was just that. She blew me away in every single scene. There were times where I loved her boldness. There were also times where I thought to myself, that is just what I would have said.
I love to read books that have characters that I relate to, am similar to, or want to be similar to. This book has everything I love. The authors represents all sides of the characters here. She has a great feeling and caring mom in Kate. There is the element of humor and that Sarah, well she is a queen to me. I cant even speak about Jaylee cause he is so real to me. Words can not describe how his loyalty took control of my heart. The Robert character pissed me off so bad, so that is the tell tale sign of a great author!
Kate grew up with a privileged family. They are so stuck up they wont even visit her in her neighborhood. She has a sister that she never sees because of the strain. Overall she is written as a very lonely woman. When she meets Jaylee it changes. She meets his family in a short amount of time so seeing the love had to hurt her, although she never said so. There is a loyalty in Washington Heights. When she learns that his father is in prison and he supports his Mom, Grandma and Sister Janinie, she falls deeper. I did too. His name is unique; Janet is his mom and Elias is his Dad so in English it is translated to Jaylee. What a perfect combination.
I urge you to read this book! It is loaded with angst, which I adore. When I got to the 90% point I was just looking at the darn Kindle. It was hard to see the ending, more that that to see there is a book 2 due out early this fall. Being I have a huge Dominican family and spent a lot of time in Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata I related so much more. I really want more of their type of family. Something I am more than anxious for.
There may be a trigger for some of the affair type. Also Insta-love type.
This book is told in dual POV's. Kate and Jaylee our main character's in the book.
First we have Kate. She's a character that you love to hate. Forty-two, has a husband and two kids, but acts like she's twenty. She makes her husband turn into the bad guy. He's really not though. I mean I was in his shoes, I'd be the one on trail.
Kate is on her way to take her kids to dance class and meets Jaylee. Jaylee, he's a 22 year old thug.
They have this Insta love connection.
She invites him back to her house, with her two kids, and she's doesn't even know him!! Who does that?? She could be putting them children in danger, but she doesn't even consider that when she leaves him alone with them in the yard.
It goes even worse from there.
She lets him take her wedding ring, and forgets to get them back. Of course she says nothing about them. Nothing!! Days go by and when she lies to her husband about who Jaylee is, he ends up babysitting her kids. Then gives her the ring a back. He could of done anything with those rings, and and it doesn't matter.
Now she's also having sex with both men.
She meets his family, and they know the situation. They still have her in their house.
If that was my son, I'd be telling him take the HO home, now!! He has nothing to offer her or her children.
Then she ends up arrested under suspicion of buying drugs. Jaylee ends up arrested for other things.
In the mean time she finds out she's pregnant and it's Jaylee's. I mean honestly in that 42 year old brain, why would she consider using protection??
Hubby who is a lawyer, give a her an ultimate.
Then you have to move on to book two.
As I stated above. I read Maldemores (book three) first. I loved and connected to those characters. I raved about the taboo, coming of age, love story to anyone who would listen. I was drawn in from page one.
But sadly, I had none of those feelings for these characters. It was just like all these things and drama were thrown together to make more angst. The characters could of been fleshed out better. Maybe started earlier back in time to show us what a good mother Kate "was". Instead of telling us and it never being felt. Things of that nature.
Maybe if I wasn't 41, I would be able to look past her age and actions. But I could never see myself doing these things at my age.
Not every book is for everyone. Like I said, love Maldemores, I recommend that, highly!!
This one, I hope if you read it, you'll enjoy it more than I did.
