Review

"SOMETHING IN THE HEIR by Jenny Gardiner is a wonderful tale of love and self discovery, as two people who should have nothing in common, somehow are perfect for each other. The story flows at an enjoyable and natural pace, with plenty of funny moments, alongside the romantic scenes. I love the secondary storyline of Caro and Darcy, and I look forward to the next instalment, to see their relationship develop. SOMETHING IN THE THE HEIR by Jenny Gardiner is a fabulous short, modern day fairy tale, with interesting characters, and I highly recommend it."
--Linda Green for FRESH FICTION

"Jenny Gardiner tells a wonderful, feel good story about an American commoner and a European prince. If you're looking for a quick read that's sure to make you smile, Something in the Heir will do the trick!"

About the Author

Hi! I'm the author of the #1 Kindle bestselling novel SLIM TO NONE; the award-winning novel SLEEPING WITH WARD CLEAVER; the novel SOMETHING IN THE HEIR (1st in the IT'S REIGNING MEN series); the memoir WINGING IT: A MEMOIR OF CARING FOR A VENGEFUL PARROT WHO'S DETERMINED TO KILL ME (Simon Spotlight/March 2010)--> now renamed BITE ME: A PARROT, A FAMILY AND A WHOLE LOT OF FLESH WOUNDS and available digitally; ANYWHERE BUT HERE; ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE; and WHERE THE HEART IS; as well as the essay collection NAKED MAN ON MAIN STREET. I also have a short story in Wade Rouse's fabulous anthology of humorous dog stories, I'M NOT THE BIGGEST BITCH IN THIS RELATIONSHIP that features such authors as Jen Lancaster, Rita Mae Brown, Sarah Pekkanen, and more. I've published two stories for Kindle: THE GALL OF IT ALL: And None of the Three F's Rhymes with Duck, and IDOL WORSHIP: A Lost Week with the Wackos and Wannabes at American Idol Auditions. I've had pieces appear in Ladies Home Journal, the Washington Post and on NPR's Day to Day. I joke that I honed my fiction writing skills while working as a publicist for a US Senator. Other jobs I've held have included: an orthodontic assistant (learning quite readily that I wasn't cut out for a career in polyester), a waitress (probably my highest-paying job), a TV reporter, a pre-obituary writer, and a photographer (claim to fame: being hired to shoot Prince Charles--with a camera, silly!). I live in Virginia with my husband, three kids, two dogs, one cat, one rabbit and a gregarious parrot. In my free time I study Italian, dream of traveling to exotic locales, and feel very guilty for rarely attempting to clean the house. When I purchased this book I had no idea it was second in a series. That being said, I enjoyed it and it gave enough background on the first book to make This book stand alone. It was a really enjoyable and fun read. Totally recommend it.

Loved this story as much as the first book.Caroline McKenzie is feisty, fun, loving, and best friends with Emma who is preparing to marry the handsome Prince Adrian. Caroline keeps thinking about her time with Darcy back in the states but he has not reached out to her since he left. There is so much that happens with Darcy and he keeps his stress away from the ones that care about him and he fights his want to connect with Caroline again. Others work together to try and get them to see what everyone else sees, the chemistry is electric but one person does the opposite that puts things in motion that made my heart break. I love the end, many great things happen for this couple and we get to meet many new characters that makes me want to read all of the other books now.

Another terrific entry in the It's Reigning Men series! I met the protagonists of this book in Something in the Heir and was really interested to see where their relationship would go. Royal equerry Darcy and vivacious, fun-loving Caroline seemed to have great chemistry and a wonderful time together, but was their hook-up in the States just a fling, or was there potential for something more? Caroline is wondering the same thing when Heir Today Gone Tomorrow starts. To her surprise since she's always been the love 'em and leave 'em type, she can't get Darcy out of her head, but he's in another country and isn't making any effort to further their relationship.

What Caroline doesn't know is that Darcy is dealing with some heavy stuff back home involving his family. No spoilers here, but suffice it to say that romance is the last thing on Darcy's mind until Caroline shows up in Monaforte to help her BFF with wedding preparations. The push-and-pull that goes on between them for the majority of the book is some good, angsty stuff, and I could understand where both characters were coming from. I really felt for the two of them and had my fingers crossed that they'd be able to overcome all their issues and find a way to make it work.

Aside from the romance, another thing I really enjoyed about this book was seeing some serious personal growth in Caroline. She was the devil-may-care, wisecracking sidekick in Book One, but she really got a chance to shine and develop in Heir Today. I was glad to see her find some purpose and passion via a new career that happens very organically, and she made some new friends so that she wasn't totally dependent on Emma anymore.

Ms. Gardiner takes her readers back to the world of royals in Heir Today Gone Tomorrow.

Caroline is left feeling alone and depressed since her best friend Emma is marrying into royalty and the guy she thought she had hit it off with hasn’t called.

Caroline heads back to the Monaforte to help Emma out with some design work and for the upcoming wedding. Darcy, the guy that hasn’t called, and Caroline are thrown into a situation that forces the two of the to admit there is still something there.

Darcy is trying to deal with family issues, but can’t stay away from her. The two of them are found in a compromising position and Darcy’s brother says something hurtful things and Caroline catches a flight back home.

Sorry no more spoilers.

I would have enjoyed reading more on the chemistry fighting between the two of them.

All and all a good read.

I really enjoyed this book. It was different from the previous book. Again you can tell the author put time and effort into researching roles lines. This book introduced some new characters including a brother you love to hate and almost feel sorry for,a loving sister and, a kind hearted matchmaking mum.

Love the character development of not only Darcy and Caroline but also how Adrian and Emma have progressed from the last novel. How Gardiner built up to not only the royal wedding but to how Darcy dealt with his father's death and gaining lordship...oh and how he and Caroline reconnect. I do want to add that Gardiner not only reconnects this book with the last but introduces the characters of the next book in a very intriguing way.
