I hoped as Emily came out of her shell and started healing from her abuse, she would mature into a intelligent worthy character. But no, the character only became more irrational. While she has some strengths she spends the whole book making the same decision; run away everytime anything gets stressful or just pisses her off. It's important to note that she never ran from the years of brutal abuse she experienced in the beginning. She is constantly upset that she's referred to as a child (the immortals are hundreds of years old). But though shes 24 at the start she acts like a childish spoiled brat and yes, does constantly need to be protected (mostly from the consequences of her own actions). While running away she gets into near death situations and has to be rescued each time. She does not learn from her experiences. Then reacts the same way the next time. The main characters around her, (while more interesting) find her attitude somewhat exasperating but ultimately "cute".
I personally enjoy a strong female character. But I prefer them to be rational. I find this character to be quite a bit like the all too often typical anime (japanese animation) little girl-like characters that are always screaming and over-reacting to situations in very juvenile ways. I know there's an audience for this. So maybe this is just not for me. But, I'm still interested in seeing the development of this story's world. The thing is this author has potential. If he or she allows this character to start to develop into a less irritating character in the next next books. Or maybe writes another series with as engrossing and imaginative a world and a better main character, I'd buy and read each book. I still have hope for this series though. I'm hoping Emily's character matures a bit in the second book of this series. Or at least I hope the author fleshes out one of the other female characters that are around but placed firmly in the background with no stories. My fingers are crossed!
There are factions in which the vampires live, and each are known for certain things.
This story is told in 3rd person, and there are 9 books total.
The first book opens up with Emily and Chevalier getting to know each other. Also, you learn how Emily handles her new found abilities and how Chevalier assists her.
Chevalier is known as the "Enforcer" in his faction. He takes out the loose ends, and holds a tight rein on everyone. When he encounters Emily, everything starts to change.
When Emily first meets Chevalier, she is quite weary of him because his kind left a terrible childhood impression on her.
This story has an excellent plot and so do the rest of the books. Read this book, get the others, and read on what happens to Emily and Chevalier as the years go by!
