Editorial Reviews

''Hell Baby,'' a comedy scripted by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (''Night at The Museum,'' ''Reno 911!: Miami'') marks their co-directing debut. Jack (Rob Corddry) and Vanessa (Leslie Bibb) are an expectant couple that moves into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans -- a house with a deadly demonic curse. Things soon spiral out of control for Jack and Vanessa, as well as their-not-so-helpful neighbor F'Resnel (Keegan-Michael Key), Vanessa's friendly psychiatrist (Michael Ian Black), Vanessa's Wiccan sister Marjorie (Riki Lindhome) and the detectives assigned to look into the rising body count (Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer). Only the Vatican's elite exorcism team (Garant and Lennon) san save them -- or can they?

This is a twisted movie, so don't go in expecting something thought provoking or a traditional horror flick. It's mostly a comedy. I was more amused than scared. It goes over the top quite a bit, but it's designed that way. Some of the characters are hilarious, like the two chain smoking priests, and the "neighbor" who lives in the crawlspace of the innocent couple who move into the haunted house. The main character is also quite funny. A super nice guy who tries to make the best of things, no matter how bizarre they get. This movie goes from absurd to ridiculous, and is a perfect fit for people who like this type of entertainment, like a Monty Python, or Team America fan.

I don't know when this whole indie comedy dudes making horror movies thing started, but it's good. If you're a fan of Reno 911 / The State / LA comedy stuff, you're gonna see a lot of familiar faces here. With plenty of gore and gratuitous nudity, this film doesn't transcend the genre of monster baby movies, but it's a totally solid addition to the canon. I hope they make a ton more of these kinds of movies.

At the outset, let me advise that this movie is not for everyone. For example, if you are a Mennonite, toddler, Shaolin Monk, evangelical minister, or a 17th Century puritan farmer who has somehow become displaced in time, you probably will not enjoy Hell Baby. However, if, like me, you were ever a fan of The State, Reno 911, Human Giant, Childrens Hospital, Key & Peele, or literally anything else that has involved contributions from Tom Lennon, Ben Garant, Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Michael Ian Black, or Keegan-Michael Key, you will enjoy this movie. Seriously, don't pay attention to the Tomatometer; you and I know that there are genres and subgenres and subcultures of movies that will never get high ratings by its standard, but which are laugh-out-loud hilarious and worth watching over and over again.

The premise is simple: a pregnant Leslie Bibb and a balder-than-ever Rob Corddry move into their new home in New Orleans. Then a bunch of messed up stuff happens for about 90 minutes. There are lots of swear words and Shakespeare jokes and po'boys and blood and penis jokes. If you hate psychologists or bicyclists or babies, then I think that you will find parts of this movie particularly satisfying.

Finally, I'm not going to pretend that it hasn't influenced my review that the movie features a solid three minutes of Riki Lindhome - aka the member of Garfunkel & Oates who isn't on Raising Hope - fully (FULLY) naked and oiled up. That alone is worth the price of admission.

I had been hearing about this movie for quite some time on many of the comedy podcasts I listen to. I really liked seeing my favorite comedians all together on the same project. Knowing that the majority of the actors are friends in real life and hang out on a regular basis showed, making the tone of the movie more fun than a lot of what gets put out.

I have always enjoyed a good horror flick, but it is a treat to both be horrified and at the same time LOL. Very entertaining and well done. I can honestly say this movies plays like the best dream you never had about a crazy house with mixed up soul stuff thrown in for fun. This movie is bent and I love it.

If you like the Reno gang, this will keep you highly entertained. It's funny all the way through, and goes by fast. Glad I wasn't put off by negative reviews.

This is what would happen if William Peter Blatty got together with The State to make a movie for Cinemax After Dark; and, yes, that is a good thing. Minus one star, however, for only half-satisfying Garfunkel & Oates fantasists.

Yes.... Reading no reviews first I picked it as my dear wife had to go to sleep early and her lazy retired husband nostalgically wanted to see a Halloween type flick and this was offered dirt cheap.

Watching the first few minutes concerned me as the main characters seemed incredibly dense but a surprise was in store as, instead of just the B movie gore I was looking for, I had stumbled on a quality piece with a very focused "Dark Humor" bent.

If you're a late night "questionable" taste flick fan and have watched a large library of "possession" movies to draw from you may enjoy this as much as I did... It is all there with good direction, acting and a twisted sense of humor. A bit of an Evil Dead meets Rosemary's Baby while visiting the exorcist.

Best,

Joe
