Hell on Ice: The Saga of the Jeannette Kindle Edition
“Ellsberg has made a glorious epic of his excellent material. . . . An artistic achievement of no small proportions” —New York Post
“As dramatic a piece of prose as will be encountered in a long search. Here Commander Ellsberg is at his best, with his simplicity of style, his devotion to reality, and his genius for making wood and metal talk.” —The New York Sun

What has stayed wirh me after reading it, is the determination of the crew and captain, refusing to give up on themselves and their shipmates, even at the cost of their own lives. At times they are drenched for days in storms, in the dark, in below freezing temperatures. I think of them every time I feel discomfort from being cold. They endured frostbite, near starvation, illness, and persevered. A warning to the squeamish - there are detailed descriptions of frostbite and its aftermath.
