The "Hellboy Animated" Double-Feature 4K/Blu-Ray combo is definitely something that Hellboy fans should consider picking up, though I will say you need to go in with realistic expectations. Is the 4K presentation a notable upgrade over the available HD release? No, not really. But is this set still a good value for its price-point? Absolutely.

These two animated features- released in 2006 and 2007- are delightful little romps that feature many of the same cast from the 2004 feature-film adaptation in voiceover roles. This includes Ron Perlman as our titular hero, who as far as I'm concerned is the only actor who can completely capture the character. (Apologies to David Harbour...) In "Sword of Storms," Hellboy finds himself transported into a bizarre wonderland inspired by Japanese mythology, where he must battle creatures and monsters to find his way home. In "Blood & Iron," Hellboy and the rest of the BPRD crew investigate a haunted mansion as part of a publicity stunt-- only to get pulled into a dark new adventure.

The films were initially released on DVD with a great assortment of bonus content, before getting a bare-bones Blu-Ray release that infuriatingly eschewed any and all special features, necessitating a double-dip for completionists. Now, they're out on 4K. And one thing I'm pleased to say is that the 4K disc actually features most of the extras from the original DVD releases. Not all, mind you... but certainly most of them. And combined with the fact that the price of this set is basically the same as the bare-bones Blu-Ray release, and well... this set is now arguably the definitive way to own these films. (Though I would recommend holding onto the DVDs if you have them just for the missing bonus content.)

Where the set falls a little flat though is the 4K presentation. I've owned these films on all three formats, and if I'm to be honest, there isn't much of an upgrade from the HD Blu-Ray to the 4K UHD disc. Don't get me wrong- it does look better than the Blu-Ray... just not notably so. The truth is, these films were initially made for the DVD/television market in the mid-2000's, and there's only so much you can do with them. While this will definitely be the version of the films I watch from now on, just go in knowing it's not a massive difference in quality, and unless you're a geek about picture quality like me, you might not even notice a difference between the 4K and Blu-Ray versions.

But even beyond the mild upgrade, the great price and the fact this set finally ports over many of the special features from the original DVD's should make this set an appealing buy for Hellboy fans. If you don't already own these movies, this is definitely the best set you can currently buy. And if you enjoy these films and already own the DVDs and Blu-Ray? Well, I'd say it's probably still worth picking up thanks to the good price.

I'm giving this a good but not perfect 4 out of 5.

Solid transfer in 4K

This is a solid transfer of the Hellboy animated features, now presented in 4K. There are several softer shots and blocky, lower resolution shots, but these likely trace back to the low budget animation itself and isn't the fault of the transfer. Some of the shots almost looked like standard definition, but they were few and far between. It was also easy to see the jagged line edges on shots where they zoom in, as it wasn't animated that way and likely was zoomed in post, revealing the limitation of the resolution the original art was delivered in. So this presentation ranges from looking just okay to looking great.

So I say that as fair warning that this isn't 4K demo material, but is likely the best the source is capable of looking when you consider the source origins. That said, this is a definite step up from the Blu-ray release (the Blu-ray is also included in the 4K pack and looks to be the same old, subtitle and special features lacking VC-1 encode). The 4K disc offers many of the special features that the DVDs had (including the audio commentary), though the special features video is obviously upscaled from standard definition. Since the old Blu-ray lacked any special features, the 4K disc is the way to go.

For the completist who has the DVDs already, don't toss them out! While most of the special features made it across, the 4K is missing the 43 minute "Keepers of Hellboy" SDCC discussion, the 4-part "Hellboy Goes East" supplement, DVD-ROM extras (scripts, storyboards), and "The Penanggalan" onscreen comic.

Love this series and have been looking forward to a new transfer for Blu-ray / 4K.

Buyer beware the digital copy is unlocked via Vudu but is only available in SD. If I had know I would probably have purchased via iTunes which has a 4K version available.

Ever since I first heard director Guillermo Del Toro on the 2004 DVD commentary track, describing the few minutes of footage omitted from the movie, I've always wanted to see them. And thankfully, I can now say that this DVD director's cut/extended edition disc box set doesn't disappoint at all with both the extra footage and a wealth of extras across the three discs. I particularly love watching the video recorded cast commentary track, as Selma Blair's deadpan comedic sly asides are a hilarious joy. The movie itself stands as one of Guillermo's very best English language fantasy movies, full of great genius invention, design and love.
