The reviewers trashing this flick either didn't see the movie or missed the point. I'm not going to review The Piano, because I know I'll hate the damn thing. Hellboy, the comic, was neither polished nor high-minded- it was ugly, violent, drunken awesomeness. The movie is exactly that. If you ever wondered how in the hell it happened that Sam Raimi helmed the Spider Man flicks and managed to look himself in the mirror, you're not the only one. This flick is essentially what Raimi would have made himself when he was in Evil Dead mode rather than $$ mode.
Was Hellboy perfect? Nah- that's why I gave it four stars. It was a damn sight better than anything I've seen recently, however, and a refreshing change from the attempts to cram a message down our throats. Not every movie has to take a political stand- this one just takes a stand for good, old fashioned gorefests you can laugh your ass off while watching over pizza and beer with your friends.
