About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. In 1994, he published the first Hellboy series through Dark Horse. There are thirteen Hellboy graphic novels (with more on the way), several spinoff titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien, and Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder), prose books, animated films, and two live-action films starring Ron Perlman. Along the way he worked on Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer for Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and was the visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Mike's books have earned numerous awards and are published in a great many countries. Mike lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat. The author lives in Los Angeles, CA.

Mike Mignola is best known as the multiple award-winning creator, writer, and artist of "B.P.R.D." and "Hellboy", but has fostered several other projects like "The Amazing Screw-On Head" and "Baltimore" with Christopher Golden. Although he began working as a professional cartoonist in the early 1980s, drawing 'a little bit of everything for just about everybody' - including characters like Batman and Wolverine - he was also a production designer on the Disney film "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". Mignola also acted as a visual consultant to Guillermo del Toro on "Blade 2" and the film versions of Hellboy, which were broadly adapted by del Toro from the original comic series. Mike Mignola currently lives in southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

I'll be honest here.... The ONLY reason this gets 4 stars is because I LOVE Hellboy and Gary Gianni's art. The story itself is not Mignola's best. While the entire set-up is interesting, the story feels very abbreviated and it doesn't really go anywhere. The dialogue is a bit wooden, with Hellboy spending most of the story chained to a mast. Not Mignola's best. The book itself is nice. It's slightly taller than the standard graphic novels, so it looks odd on the shelf with all my other Hellboy books, but the production is clean, the art is great and the book has a nice feel. My only real complaint is wishing the story had more characterization and a little more meat and details.

The artwork is typically wonderful Gianni but the story lacks any real suspense, drama, danger, or interest. It almost seems like the story was simply an attempt to explain a series of illustrations that may or may not tell a story. Plus it is yet another of Dark Horse's attempts to make something seem better than it actually is by publishing it in hardback. I love Hellboy and this was an opportunity to unite two wonderful talents and sadly it was squandered.

Let's start with the positives the art work is AMAZING i wish this guy would always illustrate for Hellboy or BPRD, also the story is kind of interesting.

Cons: I finished this whole book in about 9 minutes on the toilet so it's pretty damn short.

I love Hellboy, and I love Mike Mignola’s artwork, so I was initially disappointed when I realized that he only drew the cover for this story, but Gary Gianni changed my mind. His particular old-old school style is perfect to tell this story and makes it feel like an account discovered from a hundred years ago. Like most Hellboy stories from recent years it feels too short, but the artwork makes it definitely worth the re-read!

Die Wurzeln und Ursprünge dieses Seemannsgarns sind bei Weitem interessanter als diese Geschichte. Sie in einem Sammelband mit anderen Veröffentlichungen zu publizieren, wäre wohl klüger gewesen. So bleiben v.a. die gezeichneten Bilder in Erinnerung, aber die Geschichte hat keinen bleibenden Stellenwert im Hellboy-Universum. Schade...
