Hellfire for Sega Genesis. While there are several games for the Genesis which are similar in style and/or game play, Hellfire is the one I would highly recommend.

· As you begin game play, you'll quickly realize that this game is challenging. Attacks can come from almost any direction, and some of the enemies are shielded behind structures.

· You can cycle your fire between four directions (forward, aft, top-bottom, or all four diagonal), and your ship's colour changes to reflect your current selection. The strategy is to choose the direction of fire appropriate to the incoming threats, while avoiding enemy shots and obstacles.

· The first stage music sets a very upbeat mood, making the game more exciting, and addictive.

· While the story is fairly basic, and the opening title screen is simple, the image of the pilot at the end is rewarding. Once you beat the game on a particular difficulty, she will challenge you to play it again on the next difficulty setting.

Hellfire is one of the more popular side-scrolling shooters, so coming across a complete box in good condition at a reasonable price may be a bit challenging, but it's an absolute must for your Sega Genesis collection, whether you're a collector, or you're looking for an exciting game that's equally challenging. Definitely pick it up today!

This game, while not considered a "great" shooter (in the books), is a fantastic shooter made by toaplan (a legendary arcade shooter developer). Basically, this game was my gateway to a lot of other games both in arcade and on the genesis from toaplan and other developers. It has great play mechanics like all toaplan games and the music is excellent.

The genesis/mega drive version is very nearly arcade authentic as far as ports go in this generation. There are some differences such as a seeker pod (an automated pod that attacks enemies and eats bullets), a special laser attack, and rapid fire option that aren't present in the arcade version. As far as the graphics go, it certainly doesn't look arcade authentic but it doesn't look bad either; very little sacrifices were made getting this game to genesis intact.

Controls are spot on, speed is right, difficulty is right (variable but easy mode isn't really "easy"), music is authentic and sounds fantastic. While some genesis shooter classics are pretty expensive (comparatively to other used genesis games) there is still a ton of gameplay to be had from the genesis library especially in the shooter genre. The gameplay still holds up today and a lot of these games you'll end up playing more than modern games because there's nothing really comparative to these games made for modern consoles (most shooters are "bullet hell" which doesn't exist on the genesis).

There is one caveat with this game. If you have a genesis 2 or 3, the music plays very slowly (the gameplay is the normal speed though) at least on an ntsc model. So...oddly you'll need (one of the models of) genesis 1 to fully enjoy this game because the music sets the tone. My genesis 1 plays it fine, my genesis 2s half speed music. It's a great game it's still very playable on other genesis models it's just something people should know. This is the only game I've encountered that has this issue and I confirmed it via google.
