Editorial Reviews

The First Lady of Song returns to one of her first loves: love songs! Recorded early in her Verve era (1957-59), this is vintage Ella, skillfully arranged by Frank DeVol: You Go to My Head; Willow Weep for Me; Lost in a Fog; Tenderly; Stairway to the Stars; Moonlight in Vermont , and six more with Ben Webster, Pete Candoli, Barney Kessel, and more!

Do you know how difficult it is to choose the best album ever, or outstanding tracks on "Hello Love", as we take a listeners journey through twelve tunes into the late fiftys. What is so nice about this collection is "YOU GO TO MY HEAD"..."WILLOW WEEP FOR ME"...I'M THRU WITH LOVE"..."SPRING WILL BE A LITTLE LATE THIS YEAR" and "I'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HIS FACE", recorded March 25. 1959...is so light and fresh.

The next sessions were "EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME"..."LOST IN A FOG"...I'LL NEVER BE THE SAME"..."SO RARE", recorded October 28, 1957. The final sessions were "TENDERLY"...STAIRWAY TO THE STARS" and "MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT", recorded July 24, 1957...Ella's recordings could fill an entire library, her performance is flawless each tune is more satisfying than the previous one.

Ella's style is so timeless as you're instantly amazed by her voice. There are more complete collections than this one, but this is a great introduction to her career which include collaborations with Frank DeVol and His Orchestra...each cue takes on a delightful bit of improvisation, blending a vibrant expressive of, don't take yourself too seriously attitude.

Evidently Norman Granz, her manager knew a good thing when he took her under his wing...even though a contract was never signed between them, love and respect was there right from the beginning. If you only purchase one album by the "First Lady of Song", this collection is a keeper!

Total Time: 44:37 on 12 Tracks ~ Verve Records 62581 ~ (9/28/2004)

In between her many SONGBOOK projects that propelled her into superstardom, Ella graced us with a handful of albums like this one. The material in this album was culled from 3 separate recording dates with Frank DeVol and his orchestra. Most of the material, including four tracks also apppearing here were released on Ella's timeless album "LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE". But even if you own that album, its wise to get this counterpart collection as well. Ella revisits one of her earliest hits STAIRWAY TO THE STARS, and as mature as her voice had become, you can still hear the sweetness of youth that she exuded when she recorded it with Chick Webb eons earlier...A very lavishly poignant reading of "I'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HIS FACE" is the featured 7th track here. I'm sure Lerner and Loewe finally realized what a superb song they wrote upon hearing Miss Fitzgerald's reading. Other standouts include the wistful "YOU GO TO MY HEAD", "I'M THROUGH WITH LOVE", and even "TENDERLY" a song I never cared for until hearing Ella sing it. And I'm sure you'll enjoy Ella's lovely reading of "SPRING WILL BE A LITTLE LATE THIS YEAR". So this album's on special order...get the LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE cd shipped to you first, then listen to both back to back!

This is a very special album of excellent songs with gorgeous orchestral arrangements by Frank DeVol and Ella singing at her very best. Scandalously unattainable for many years (I had been trying to find it for 20 years), "Hello love" is now widely available. The album exudes a slow, lazy groove with each song embellished here and there with restrained, but intricate, seductive little saxophone, flute or horn solos. Ella's singing matches the instrumentalists skills as she expertly phrases, vibratos and bends and slides notes with perfect dynamics and control. As do most accomplished musicians, she makes it sound completely effortless and natural. With their stunning arrangements, "You go to my head" and "Tenderly" send me somewhere else every time I listen to them. Many of my visitors, both young and old have been blown away by this music and felt compelled to go and buy it for themselves. Recommended to those who like good music.

Since I first knew Ella I loved both her scat singing and her lovely treatment of ballads. When I knew few of her work I dreamed about her singing a song that I learned from Miss Monroe on "Someone like it hot", that is "I'm thru with love".
When I discovered this Album, I unhearted a trasure full of gemms and gold, that everytime gives me joy and pure emotions! I simply LOVE this album, and I hope it will be soon reissue on standard CD, so that everyone in the world could listen to it, everyday, forever!!!!
