I don't know why this album gets lukewarm critical reviews. I love it. Maybe because it isn't the exact same alterna-punk Irish folk hybrid they became famous for previously. Some people didn't like some of the more pop-oriented stuff, but that's bull - this stuff is pure Pogues at the core, and Shane is still (barely) on top of his poetic game.

The songs stick to you, and have stayed with me as lovingly as when I first heard this album 17 years ago. You want another "If I Should Fall From Grace With God?" Then play that album over and over, again and again, until you are ready for This one.

I bought this Vinyl record from cdgiveaways. Unfortunately, at least for me, I just got around to opening this record and am past the return date. This was bought as new.. It is not. There are smudges and spots of built up residue. I am hesitant to play it because I do not want to damage my stylus. The built up residue is quite pronounced. I will try to clean it off but am likely to damage the record. In any case after some research there seems to be multiple versions/mixes of the Pogues CDs and vinyl records for sale now. I bought all my Pogues CDs soon after they were originally released (about 14 years ago). I am thinking buying Vinyl now may not give me what I want, as I noted in my review of "Peace and Love". This record is a 2013 remix which I find unsatisfactory. I do like the version I have on CD which I bought soon after release.

Great! The compassion of Irish folk and political music up-dated for a new generation. The DUBLINERS approve of them so much that they perform with them on a tune or two. Definitely different and much of it is even geared to modern dancing.

The Pogues have never sounded more on fire than this CD. A must have and one of my favourite Pogues CDs. As a longtime Pogues fan, I think there's not a bad album they made with Shane McGowan, but the writing and performances are so strong on Hell's Ditch. This is truly one of my all time fav CDs of all time. A must have for your collection.
