Tolkien and “Dungeons & Dragons” fans will see some homage in Hudnall’s world, but he builds a unique world from parts both traditional and original. It’s a new world and a new story built on a grand tradition of fantasy.
While a very solid beginning to the series, “Hell’s Reward” is only that. Hudnall only really introduces readers to his cast in this novel before setting up their quest for later books. Fortunately the story readers do get is more than enough to make them interested in more.
The book wanders a bit at times exploring the lives and pasts of the main characters as they are drawn back together to face a growing threat, but that is also it's strength since by the end of the first book you feel a connection to them all.
Another big plus are the spot illustrations by John Ridgeway. I'm definitely inboard for book two!
You see I'm a fan of fantasy fiction. I loved Robert E. Howard, J.R.R. Tolkein, George R.R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, and, especially, Joe Abercrombie.
Imagine my pleasure when I found out Hudnall was crafting a novel set in the fantasy world he established in his Age of Heroes comic series. This book lives up to the anticipation and stands tall among those writers I previously mentioned. Can anyone notify Hollywood! This would make a great movie! It even features some great art by John Ridgeway inside and a fabulous Val Mayerik cover.
Seven heroes drawn from disparate areas of Hudnall's fantasy world must team up to complete a truly unexpected adventure. It's like The Magnificent Seven or the Seven Samurai or the X-men meets Game of Thrones or the Lord of the Rings. Great stuff! Heroic adventure with a real sense of the human spirit, dire consequences in a fantastic setting, and a touch of good humor! I've heard that this is only the first volume of more stories set in this exciting new world. Keep 'em coming, Mr. Hudnall!
The novel features a cover illustration by Val Mayerik and powerful interior illustrations of John Ridgway reminiscent of Hal Foster.
