As usual, I went to my trusted Amazon to look for something I wanted. Found this book to replace one I "loaned and lost" several years ago after having it since maybe even before I was married. It's fun to look through hints that might today be considered old-fashioned by some. Many of those hints are tried and true, and they're as relevant today as they were decades ago. Hints from Heloise's books helped me get a real handle on housekeeping ideas that I continue to use after more than 45 years of marriage!

Love the Heloise books. They are so much fun to read! The outdated stuff about cassette tapes, 8 tracks etc are good for a laugh but most of the information is still relevant. So, they are humorous and informative.

This was the first housekeeping book I ever got and it is WONDERFUL. I will point out, however, that this was years ago and that 20% of the adivce in this book is so outdated that it isn't usable anymore. Pats stretchers, anyone? Who has clothes lines anymore...

That being said, the rest of the tips are great. It's a fun and fast read that will get you motivated to clean your house, cook, do stuff with your kids... even do thoes time consuming chores you never wanted to do.

I read this and it makes me proud to be a housekeeper.

It's broken down into general sections and there are quite a few paragraphs but most of it is a one or two line tip and trick, then moving on. Short and sweet and well worded to get a point across.

Tips include:

Putting potatoes into a muffin tin to cook them in the over. This keeps them spread apart and stops them from rolling all over the place when you go to take them out.

How to make home made butter milk.

How to make the best fried chicken. (I STILL use this meathod and have gotten loads of compliments on my great fried chicken.)

"Top cleaning"- What is and how to do it.

Getting your 'personal chores' done while taking care of the house at the same time. Personal chores being things like doing your nails :-)

It's a good beginner housekeeping book. Some of the newer tomes can be overwhelming in their details and details and details, not to mention their demands. This book is simple and lovely.

Highly recomended.

I received this same paperback book when I got married in 08/1965 as a wedding gift from an elderly grand-aunt. I used it like a bible while raising my family. Over the years I either misplaced it or my son took it to his future wife who did not know how to cook and thought she could learn from my "bible". When I received this older paperback recently, my daughter-in-law said she didn't realize that she gave it back to me. I explained that I bought it on Amazon with the Heloise's household Hints. My 2 daughters also still use some of the things I taught them from the book. Thank you so much.
