Her description of how ADHD manifests itself is the best I’ve ever read. Is this what ADHD is really like for all women? I don't know how others experience their ADHD. It’s certainly more-or-less spot on for me. It’s the first book I’ve come across that describe my world in a simple, down-to-earth way that others can understand. She paints word pictures instead of offering a list of symptoms that are meaningless to someone who doesn’t “get it.”
I'm breaking my own rules by writing a review without having finished the book. That's how strongly I feel. I haven't begun to read the strategies. I don't care if they are useless. The first section of this book alone is worth every penny of the cost. That section is so thoughtfully written that I anticipate the remainder of the book will be equally helpful.
I purchased this on Kindle. I'm planning to buy the paperback so I can share it with others. Maybe. Just maybe. it will allow them to understand the world I, and others like me, see and live in everyday and how challenging that can be.
What makes this book so valuable is its brevity. It is super quick and easy to remind myself of important strategies and find the specific one I'm looking for without getting distracted, because there are only 45 pages to flip through. I do this multiple times a day to help me stay on track. In each paragraph, THE IMPORTANT POINTS ARE IN BOLD, so if you just skim the page, the words "LAUNCHPAD BY THE DOOR" and "SET AN ALARM WITH TIME TO SPARE" are the ones that pop out on the page. Some days, that's all I need to know.
I'm the type of ADHD gal who loves to read and can hyper-focus and finish a thick novel in a few sittings. That is, I can do this when I'm using reading as form of "productive procrastination" when i really should be doing something else. If I'm trying to get through my to do list, one of the WORST things i can do usually is pick up a book! I've read dozens of books about ADHD, and many of them offer a wealth of valuable information. But when I'm in the middle of the day-to-day hustle, struggling to juggle 12 balls without dropping a single one and still look cute doing it, I just don't have time to wade through 200 pages searching for the strategy that might help me in the moment. The most likely result is that I'll drop ALL the balls and just hide out and read instead.
THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT. Congrats to Joan Wilder for following through and finishing this project and publishing a genuinely useful daily tool!
