Susan Brewster, a longtime psychotherapist whose practice includes working with abused women and their families, recognizes that friends and family need specific tools and ideas to help them develop a relationship with their abused loved one that will ultimately benefit her, not control her. As the survivor of an abusive relationship herself, Brewster teaches readers how to recognize the signs of abuse, handle negative feelings, become an effective advocate, deal with the abuser, and more.
With a new introduction and updated resource section, this straightforward and compassionate book is just as timely and important as ever, offering the information needed to give strength to women who are trying to break free.

Many books address the issue of battered women, but this is perhaps the first that is meant to help those who want to help.” Library Journal

This book helped me realize that all was not hopeless, that I could play a role, if even just a small one, in helping my friend get through this. Although it is still a work in progress, the book has helped ease my frustrations and allowed me to be better able to offer the support my friend needs. If you too are tired of being told that there is nothing you can do, get this book!
Just a note: This book was originally titled "To Be An Anchor In The Storm" and the only obvious changes between that book, which I found at the local library, and this reprint which I purchased through Amazon was to some of the domestic violence resource info in the back of the book.
I talk to her everyday and subtlely say what I need to say without forcing her to defend him. She knows how I feel and how her stepfather and brothers and cousins feel. By using some of these techniques, she is beginning to come around.
I just wish there was a group for families of abuse victims because I feel like I'm loosing my mind. This book plus a few others that I am reading are keeping me from going crazy. I keep my eye on the purpose which is to get her home before something terrible happens. There is advice I can give her to keep her safe. Couples counseling for abusive relationships is not a good idea. I didn't know that before reading this book.
The author has been there, done that so she is speaking from personal experience as well as professional experience. Best one out there that I've found so far for families trying to help their loved ones get out of a bad situation.

This book helps you see inside the head of an abused woman, and will help you understand why, if you say, "This guy is bad news - you need break it off with him," you will actually make her MORE dependent on him - not less. This is the greatest insight imaginable.
Susan Brewster takes you step by step through the tactics you must use if you are to counteract the effects of his brainwashing/abuse. She makes no easy promises - this is a slow task, building trust and enabling the woman to regain her confidence. It requires commitment and effort. But if your daughter or your sister or your friend or your colleague is trapped in a demeaning relationship and you want to help - this is the ONLY book for you. There are plenty of books for abused women themselves - though if they are being psychologically abused, they are unlike to realise that what is happening to them is "abuse." But I haven''t found anything else that is addressed to those who care. And in a way it doesn't matter - because when you have read this you will understand exactly why abused women think like they do, why they are trapped, why they stick with appalling relationships -and why you will need to take the softly softly approach outlined in this book if you are to be of any help at all. I cannot recommend it more highly.
