While the arguments can be somewhat high-concept, the prose is highly readable. The ideas should be appealing and fresh to Hemingway veterans yet thoroughly accessible to newcomers. Whether taken as a whole or parsed by interests, this book makes a great companion for anyone desiring a better acquaintance with one of the greatest American authors. By virtue of sedulous and thoughtfully applied research, Nickel makes a strong case for the profound influence of Catholicism on Hemingway's fiction. Hemingway's Dark Night represents part of the emerging higher standard for literary criticism, one that demands not only careful interpretation but a pleasurable reading experience as well.
