'The Gigantic Turnip is an old, old tale, but this new version has to be one of the best ever... Rhythmical, funny and perfectly paced' -- The Guardian --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Aleksei Tolstoy (1883-1945) was born and lived in Russia. During his four-decade literary career, he witnessed milestone historic events, both in his home country of Russia and abroad. He was a master storyteller, and wrote several children's tales as well as poems, plays and stories for adults. Niamh Sharkey, an award-winning Irish illustrator, graduated from the College of Marketing and Design, Ireland, in 1994 with First Class Honours. Format: Hardcover
This Chilian folk tale told in song format is a must have. Great for any parent, teacher, or librarian. The song on the CD matches the text in this wonderfully illustrated book. The song is funny and easy for children to sing along with. There is also counting by twos and animal relationships (cat to kitten, cow to calf). I used this in my library with 1st and 2nd grade students and they loved it! By the end of the book, everyone was swaying and singing along with the music. Moooo!

This book features beautiful illustrations. They are bold and bright, and exactly what attracts the attention of a 4 year old boy like my son. He loves the repetition and counting in this book, and I only wish I'd found it sooner. I had to listen to the CD (that comes with the book) to understand exactly how the rhythm in the song goes. I must say, it's nicely performed and the guitar is very soothing. The tune is catchy and can also be listened to while a child "reads" along in the book. Terrific for emergent readers. I'd recommend this for ages 3 and up without reservation.
