Henri's Mantle: 100 Meditations on Nouwen's Legacy Henri Nouwen and his student Chris Glaser have both enriched my spiritual journey through their individual books. Chris begins with a quote from one of Henri's books, often puts it into Henri's life context and then reflects upon the quote. Being a student of Henri, Chris has personal correspondence and conversations to draw upon to add to the picture of Henri. Each of the 100 meditations is about 2 pages long. The table of contents summarizes in 2 to 6 words what each meditation is about so that a reader can skim through the contents to find the meditation that might be most meaningful for the immediate moment. This is a book to meditate upon for 100 days and not read all of it at one sitting. This book is going to join the short list of books that I turn to again and again for personal reflection.
I am thoroughly enjoying this devotional book and actually like it better than Nouwen's Bread for the Journey. I appreciate Glaser's insights in using Nouwen's many books as inspiration for his reflections.
In case you like to read meditations one a day from beginning to end, "Henri's Mantle" works perfectly. But for people like me, who want to read a meditation occasionally in order to stimulate their inner life, the combination of Henri Nouwen and Chris Glaser is even better. Always there is something in those 100 meditations to bring us home to a more genuine incarnation. Virginia R. Mollenkott, author of 14 books, including "Sensuous Spirituality."
Six years ago I had the pleasure of sharing with Chris in a Nouwen Retreat. It was an experience that made me anxious to finally receive my copy of Henry's Mantle. I have read most of Nouwen's published works. Chris has put together a thorough and touching review of the teachings of this spiritual giant. Nouwen himself is easy to read and re-read and to find that the depths of your own spiritual journey have somehow been plumbed by Henri. Chris brings this profoundly personal connection through in the writings that he reflects upon. Along with the many Nouwen volumes that I re-read regularly, I have added this book from Chris Glaser as one to visit on a regular basis. I am thankful that someone took the time and care to prepare such a helpful and accessible personal devotional resource.
I have tried not to gobble this book up, since it is designed as a series of meditations; however, I just keep reading and saying "absolutely" to myself. It's great to have someone who is so articulate. I intend to buy copies for friends at Christmastime. Highly recommended!
