Henry Garrison: St. Dante's Savior is the debut novel of the extremely talented Joey Marsilio. A huge fan of his short humor pieces and a co-writer on his variety show "Steel & Marsilio", I was rather surprised to find his first book to be aimed at young adults. How would his edgy sensibility translate to the world of children's literature? Quite well, it turns out.
Hating the sub-genre of "child with superpowers" books, which is the basic premise of this tale, put me in an odd position as a reader right off the bat. Through a pair of enchanted gloves found in his grandmother's attic, Henry discovers he has super-strength, super-healing, and super-jumping (not to be confused with flying) abilities.
Then a giant snake rampages through the city, along with the snake's owner, a being from another dimension who wishes to kidnap Henry to help him win a planetary war.
Mr. Marsilio is a gifted writer, and he refuses to dumb down his prose as some other children's authors do. The protagonist is well-fleshed out, and the interactions between him and his best friends are natural and winsome.
The story itself can at times be frustrating. Uncertain whether to play the conflict entirely straight or fully engage as a playful satire, the tone shifts awkwardly back and forth. The adult characters are barely sketched out stereotypes, dumb and/or apathetic. This makes no sense in a fictional world where the children use polysyllabic words with regularity.
When the book is "on" it hums with a nitrous oxide like rush. Certain turns of phrase are so hilarious you will burst into a fit of the giggles. The balance Mr. Marsilio weaves between being kid-friendly but not lame is a deft one, not easily mastered. Slight profanity and mild double entendres may raise a few parents' eyebrows, but the tradeoff is a book that kids will find hip and not preachy. I highly recommend this to parents whose children enjoy the best-selling "Michael Vey" series by Richard Paul Evans.
St. Dante's Savior is the first book in a series of six. Where will future volumes take the reader? I have no idea. But, as Joey Marsilio fleshes out his supporting cast and tightens his narrative reins, there's no doubt in my mind that the pleasure will be the reader's. Grade: B

This is a pretty quick, but really good read. As someone who consumes books, I heard of this book from a few people who recommended it. For the "young adult" genre, I'd put it fairly high up there. Perhaps right below Harry Potter, and obviously way above the Twilight series. It'd be interesting to find out where the story goes from here. Definite potential for a huge series!

An exciting teenager turned superhero story, not really like other superhero stories I've read before. This book is a quick and easy read filled with action and authentic characters that were easy to love (especially since most of them were nerdy like me). The story wraps things up nicely, but leaves it open enough for more. Looking forward to future books in this series!

What a great, fun, fantasy ride "Henry Garrison:St. Dante's Savior" was. I immediately fell in love with the protagonist, a teenage boy so real, smart and ordinary, that I wondered where his journey might lead. Well, he ends up becoming more than he could ever imagine when he discovers a pair of magical gloves that give him powers beyond his wildest dreams. There were twists and turns that kept me reading all afternoon !
All the characters are unique and quirky. Actually, I 'saw' them all in my mind's eye because the writing was so cinematic. I could easily see this as a movie or TV series.
I kept reading till the end with an appetite and interest I haven't felt in a while.
Bravo to this writer! For a first novel, Joey Marsilio has made a strong entrance into the world of young adult literature. More, please!!!

What is very most impressive to me about this book, is that it is so well done that people (like me) who do not typically read novels very often, and are not typically drawn to this genre of book can still find this book highly entertaining and have a hard time putting it down. The main character has such a good and pure heart, his innocence is very endearing and an instant attachment is formed with him as a reader. The action scenes in the book are so vivid and easy to imagine. The descriptions are so complete that it's as if you can see the events as a movie clearly playing in your head. It makes for a very unique and fun reading experience.
The plot takes some nail biting twists and keeps the reader from wanting to stop reading. The characters and issues in the book (although a work of sci-fi fantasy) are very relatable, which is an impressive feat for the genre. Many books in this genre are other worldly and works of "super fiction" if I may.
In fact, Henry Garrison: St. Dante's Savior, surpasses the genre for which it could easily be placed it. It is more than just a fantasy story, it is more than just super hero sci-fi, it is more than just an action/adventure. It's a heartfelt, thrilling look in a beautiful imagination of the writer, and of the beauty of the main character's human spirit. It keeps the reader guessing, and it builds together wonderfully. Time spent reading it was time well spent. I would highly recommend this to any reader.

I think this is a good book for young adults and teens. It was an easy read and it gives people a look into a different kind of character. I like the plot and the author has a good grasp of telling a unique story. So many times we are spoon fed typical boring monotony and this was really refreshing. I feel that the message of this book is to give people a nice escape and a feeling of empowerment!! Sometimes that is what you need. When you are young, you face all kinds of adversity and you need a motivator. This book is just that. I highly recommend it!

Debut book by talented Joey Marsillio shows his diversity with a storyline that is full of surprises with a touch of humor along the way. Story about a high school boy who finds a pair of gloves that leads to many unexpected twist and truns. Great for any fantasy adventure readers and will be a long story series. Can't wait for the next book to see what happens!

The potential American Terry Pratchett, Joey Marsilio, combines humor with a touch of X-Files to this novel for young adults that I as an adult fully enjoyed. I look forward to the next book in the series.
