This is the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition of the same name organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, which was shown there from January to April 2012 and then traveled to the Cincinnati Art Museum (May to September) and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (October 2012 to January 2013). Although some small individual shows of the works of Henry O. Tanner (1859-1937) have been presented before, he has usually been exhibited as one of the artists in a larger group, as, for example, in the great 2006 "Americans in Paris" show in London, Boston and New York. That is perhaps because, having gone to Paris in 1891, he remained in France for the rest of his life and returned only occasionally, and always briefly, to his native country. He was an expatriate in the truest sense of the word, and during his lifetime he was far better known in Europe than here. It is very good, then--even if it has taken seventy-five years since his death--that the PAFA has mounted this first substantial solo exhibition and published its 308-page catalogue, which is the first comprehensive book on Tanner's work and the largest collection of his oeuvre currently available.
And it's quite a good book. There are 106 full-color plates, mostly full-page, spanning the almost sixty years of his active career and including such iconic works as "The Banjo Lesson" (1893), an African-American genre painting for which he is probably best known in the US, and "The Resurrection of Lazarus" (1896), acquired by the French government for the collection of the Luxembourg Museum in a kind of official recognition of his work that was an important milestone in his creative development. I did not see the exhibition and have not seen enough of Tanner's paintings in the original to judge whether the reproductions are true to color, which would be a particularly important point for him; the essayists in the volume frequently mention the very subtle color effects he achieved in the many nocturnal and low-light scenes he painted. The reproductions feature a wide range of blues from lapis and aquamarine to cerulean and cyans; none seem either washed out or excessive, but all I can say for sure is that they are sharp and seem natural. There are also ninety or so companion illustrations, also mostly in color. Twelve essays by various hands, including those of the scholar and painter David Driskell, put Tanner and his work into a very wide context, ranging from a discussion of his painting styles to his prominent role in the American expatriate community in France, family life at his residence in Brittany and his resistance to being drawn into issues of racial conflict in America (even though he quite consciously left the US in order to escape its endemic racism and its efforts to pigeon-hole him as a "Negro artist"--in France he was known simply as a prominent "American artist"). The breadth of these essays provides an excellent introduction to his life and work. There is a 16-page chronology of his life and career, liberally illustrated with photographs of him and his family and friends, as well as a selected bibliography and comprehensive index. For me there is a bit too much emphasis on the biographical and social at the expense of the aesthetic to warrant an enthusiastic five-star rating, but the book is unquestionably a very valuable contribution to our understanding of American art in the first half of the last century, and I can warmly recommend it to anyone interested in that area.

This beautiful book, companion publication to the exhibition of the same name, presents a complex overview of the life and career of the pioneering African American artist Henry O. Tanner (1859–1937). Recognized as the patriarch of African American artists, Tanner forged a path to international success, powerfully influencing younger black artists who came after him. Following a preface by David Driskell, the essays in this book―written by international scholars including Alan Braddock, Michael Leja, Jean-Claude Lesage, Richard Powell, Marc Simpson, Tyler Stovall, and Hélène Valance―explore many facets of Tanner’s life, including his upbringing in post–Civil War Philadelphia, his background as the son of a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal church, and his role as the first major academically trained African American artist. Additional essays discuss Tanner’s expatriate life in France, his depictions of the Holy Land and North Africa, and the scientific and technical innovations reflected in his oeuvre. Edited and introduced by Anna O. Marley, this volume expands our understanding of Tanner’s place in art history, showing that his status as a painter was deeply influenced by his race but not decided by it.

From the Inside Flap
This book constitutes a very welcome contribution to the public appreciation and scholarly study of Henry Ossawa Tanner, a painter of considerable significance in both Europe and America, and one whose religious imagery merits careful consideration. These well-researched essays by an international team of scholars offer substantial reflections on complex issues of race and religion, and situate the artists work and career within the context of his life and times. This is a robust framing of Tanner as a cultural phenomenon and one that readers will find quite rewarding.David Morgan, Professor of Religion at Duke University and author of The Embodied Eye: Religious Visual Culture and the Social Life of Feeling
Henry Ossawa Tanner has finally been recognized as an important artist in the last twenty years, and is now firmly part of the American canon as the first major African American painter to emerge from the academy. This book enriches our understanding of Tanners historic place in American art by considering his work as an early modernist religious artista status entwined with his race, but not defined by it. These essays, by an impressive collection of scholars, are full of substantially new material, and succeed in broadening our conception of Tanners life and work.Bruce Robertson, Professor of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

This is an excellent catalog of Henry O. Tanner's work. It is very detailed and reveals almost every aspect of his life. This book is filled with many full color pages of Mr. Tanner's paintings from early in his career up until he died. The biography of his life as an artist is fascinating and informative. This book is definitely a collectors item.

I was very satified with this book. It presents a wide variety of prints of Mr. Tanner's work that represent the array of his work well. The texts were a bit inconsistent in quality but generally quite good and written by a nice variety of authors. It was a very nice presentation of the artist.

This splendid book for your coffee-table is a treasure. It is edited and introduced by Anna Marley, Curator of Historical American Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where Henry Tanner enrolled for his earliest art studies in 1879. This volume was designed to accompany the PAFA's exhibition of Tanner's paintings (2011-12). The book's gems are its beautiful plates, on high-quality paper, reproducing 106 of Tanner's paintings and etchings (1877–1936). Prefacing these masterworks are a dozen essays, by the world's finest interpreters of Tanner, on different dimensions of his life and work: Tanner in the context of black artists, his experience as an expatriate painter in France (required because he was married to a caucasian woman), his religious themes, and his style and technique. While all of the essays are serious, technical contributions, I found none of them beyond my reach, and I'm no art historian. They truly illuminate this artist and his work and help me better appreciate his achievements. The book itself is a masterpiece of construction, balance, and execution: well written, lavishly illustrated, including a chronology of Tanner's life, a copious bibliography, and a useful index. Whether approaching this genius for the first time or revisiting his stunning artistry, you will not find a better book on Tanner, nor one priced so affordably. Most highly recommended.

Companion book to this artists' exhibit at PAFA a few years back. The biography is interesting and engaging for a reader (this artist was totally new to me). The photos of his paintings with accompanying descriptors are beautiful. I learned much and enjoyed every page.
