Layla is on her way to South Padre Island to enjoy the very last spring break of her college career when her car breaks down in nowhere Georgia. To make matters even worse, her wallet with all of her cash and credit cards was stolen the same day. With no money for car repair, or even food or a place to stay, Layla was lucky she met Phin, who was more than willing to share his bed with her.

Phin makes his money by being a full time pool player and a part time mechanic. Growing up in a Gypsy family, he has never really had a place to call home, but he's always dreamed of it and has finally decided now is the time to settle down, he just needs to win one last pool tournament.

Phin thought he had it all figured out, but his feelings for Layla through his plans out of whack. Layla only has a few months left before graduation and an awesome job lined up, but the pressure to succeed is sometimes overwhelming. When she learns about Phin traveling lifestyle, and spends time with him, she begins to think that maybe that's the right lifestyle for her.

In just a few days Layla and Phin develop intense feelings for each other, but soon they realize that they each want the kind of life that the other has had. When Phin realizes how much Layla is willing to give up, he knows he must convince her otherwise, even if means ruining their relationship. But when faced with a second chance, Layla and Phin must find a way to meet in the middle.

This was a fairly short novella. I usually love novellas because i can get a complete story in one sitting. This one felt lacking to me. I felt that the end of the story was rushed, and I didn't feel as though Phin and Layla had actually resolved their issues.

I really liked Her Best Shot, but I wish it were longer! Layla is quickly approaching graduation and she already has her dream job lined up, so to celebrate, she and her girlfriends are going to have an awesome Spring Break in Texas. Too bad that Layla's car breaks down on her way and her wallet gets stolen while playing pool at a bar. Luckily, she's been playing with Phin who offers her a place on his couch while he repairs her transmission. It's certainly a vacation Layla is not likely to forget.

Her Best Shot was fun. I loved that Layla was a math geek, and I thought the pool shark angle was great. But like I said, it was too short! I don't feel like I really got a sense of who Layla was other than being a math geek. I couldn't tell if her behavior was out of character and she was throwing caution to the wind. Or is she a sexy math geek who regularly picks up guys? I just didn't know, especially toward the end when she makes a seemingly rash decision.

Other than that, I thought Her Best Shot was great. It's super sexy! Phin and Layla are great together! There are some interesting tidbits about his culture that affect what they do in the bedroom, but I do wish he hadn't been constantly referred to as a "gypsy." Perhaps we should move past that word. I also really enjoyed their pool playing scenes together. Layla is competitive! The ending was really open though, so I wanted to know what happened next!

This was probably my least favorite story in the trilogy. So if this wasn't your favorite--don't worry! It'll get better!

This is the story of Finn and Rayna. Rayna finds herself stuck, just waiting for her car to be fixed. Enter Finn. He's basically a pool hustler, drifting from town to town, making his money and moving on. She finds herself drawn to him because he is her exact opposite and she takes comfort in that freedom. They had good chemistry and I did believe their attraction to one another.

I felt like Rayna made several poor decisions here, or maybe they were just very different from what I would have done. It felt a bit forced, like the author really wanted the heroine to do a certain thing, but couldn't quite make it work right. It came out just a little unbelievable and a lot irresponsible.

For a book series that is supposedly revolving around a handful of nerd girls, I didn't really think that Rayna was all that nerdy, aside from a couple t-shirts and her major. I did like her, however.

Finn is very much the stereotypical broken bad boy hero. There wasn't much exciting about him. I didn't like or dislike him, really.

I obviously liked the book enough to keep reading the trilogy, but I wasn't terribly impressed with it, especially after reading the two that follow. Definitely keep reading for better stories!

Strong female leads and mysterious men are two things that make me want to read a book. The first in a series of three friends starts off with a hot billiards game and a broken V.W. bug. Layla is like genius smart with math and statistics, M.I.T. grad and all. Phin, damn sexy name, is a drifter never really settling down. They have a random week of sex and discovery, but what does their future hold? Great story telling and strong 3 dimensional characters makes Schroeder one of my favorite writers.
