I’ve been grappling back and forth as to how I’d like to review Shashane Wallace’s, Her Crime, His Time. The truth is, that I have mixed feelings about this book. So, I’ll just lay out the good news and the bad news. But let me clarify that the bad news isn’t actually bad at all.
The good news is that Wallace hooked me with her story from the first chapter. Immediately, I wanted to know more about these people. The love between Jaz and Terrell was intense and my heart was broken for both of them through their miscommunications and need to protect each other.
The bad news is that I didn’t feel like I got the whole story. I craved more. Much more. The story seemed to start in the middle, which is fine, but I kept waiting for the author to go back and feed me the beginning. There simply wasn’t enough information to make the case for Jaz to betray her vows to Terrell. I wanted the scene with War played out that led to the blackmail. The discovery that more than one person betrayed Terrell was also shocking, but the reader was left with no understanding or motivation as to why he would do such a thing.
The bottom line is that this book was way too short and left me wondering. Maybe that was Wallace’s goal. With more books to come in this series, I can only hope that she will tell Jaz and Terrell’s story from the time they first fell in love and continue from there, right up to the devastating decisions Jaz felt she had to make. So the bad news is actually good. I need to know it all.
I’m caught between 3 & 4 stars on this one. I would have easily given it 4 had the storyline satisfied all the loose ends. 3½ stars.
We are introduced to Jaz, a woman in an abusive marriage, and Terrell, her devoted one true love. After Jazz commits a horrible crime, he takes the blame and is sent to prison, with her promises to wait for him. While he is in jail, she ends up with War, a rival of Terrell, crushing the man behind bars. Upon his release, he goes looking for answers. Answers that Jaz is afraid to give, for the sake of her young son, and her man.
The best thrillers leave you excited for the next chapter, and the author knows how to build suspense. Packed in the pages of the fast moving story are a love triangle, blackmail, and two men on a collision course for the hand of the same woman. The end is satisfying and leaves you ready for the next installment, as it ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. A preview of part two of the story is included.
Wallace has written a steamy romance that sets itself apart by being a page turner that hooks you, leaving you wanting more.
My main complaint is the large number of typos – spelling, usage, and punctuation errors. Since the book is told in alternating chapters narrated by the two main characters, one might excuse the errors as simply how they speak – except that both are college educated and generally use language quite well, so I presume this was a problem of insufficient editing. I would urge Ms. Wallace to pore over the manuscript carefully or find someone to help her edit it.
If you can overlook the typos, this book is worth a read. I rated it 3.5 stars.
