I’ve been grappling back and forth as to how I’d like to review Shashane Wallace’s, Her Crime, His Time. The truth is, that I have mixed feelings about this book. So, I’ll just lay out the good news and the bad news. But let me clarify that the bad news isn’t actually bad at all.
The good news is that Wallace hooked me with her story from the first chapter. Immediately, I wanted to know more about these people. The love between Jaz and Terrell was intense and my heart was broken for both of them through their miscommunications and need to protect each other.
The bad news is that I didn’t feel like I got the whole story. I craved more. Much more. The story seemed to start in the middle, which is fine, but I kept waiting for the author to go back and feed me the beginning. There simply wasn’t enough information to make the case for Jaz to betray her vows to Terrell. I wanted the scene with War played out that led to the blackmail. The discovery that more than one person betrayed Terrell was also shocking, but the reader was left with no understanding or motivation as to why he would do such a thing.
The bottom line is that this book was way too short and left me wondering. Maybe that was Wallace’s goal. With more books to come in this series, I can only hope that she will tell Jaz and Terrell’s story from the time they first fell in love and continue from there, right up to the devastating decisions Jaz felt she had to make. So the bad news is actually good. I need to know it all.
I’m caught between 3 & 4 stars on this one. I would have easily given it 4 had the storyline satisfied all the loose ends. 3½ stars.
Love unconditional, was all I could think about as I read through the heartwarming and heartbreaking pages of Her Crime, His Time. This short novel started off with a bang and definetly ended with a bang. Let me start by saying the character of Terrell was absolutely heroic. I don't know too many men that would have jumped through the hurdles of hell for a woman that wasn't necessarily theirs and to be honest didn't really deserve the undying devotion he showed her. Terrell was a man in love and when someone is in love there is no right or wrong, there is no holding back. A person in love will move mountains to make sure their significant other is protected and that is exactly what Terrell did. My heart ached for him once he found out about Jaz and War but even then the pain he felt couldn't overshadow amorous connection between the two. I could practically feel the emotion through the pages as Terrell describe the desperate need he had for Jaz even though she had betrayed him. The chapter when they finally confront each other was powerful and moved me deeply. I was happy to see that the two were able to overcome this terrible trial together but something tells me the fight for them to achieve peace is far from over. This was an amazing read Ms Wallace, please keep up the good work.
