Editorial Reviews

Review

"If there is indeed a Logan McKinnon in the world, may he kindly step forward! Logan, the hero of this novel is what made the book such an enriching read for me. Sexy, alpha and a true man Logan had me from the moment I was introduced to him!  Author Lisa Mondello has an extraordinary talent for writing and as this was my first time ever reviewing anything penned by her and it won't be my last. There were many factors I enjoyed about this novel, but the writing style is what I loved most. The novel is fresh, its hot and it has heart! Honestly, Her Dakota Man is exactly what a Romance novel should be."

******My Rant May Contain Spoilers******

Oh my, I don't find pleasure in leaving a bad review but in this case I had no other choice. I found this book to be a very poor read and I really wish I had not read it at all. I don't like the dissatisfied, disgruntled feelings it left in my gut.

Logan...could he have been any more of an ignorant fool? Why would he take a woman's word as the gospel truth when he had no relationship with her but friendship and no proof of anything she was telling him? Why would he take her word that the only woman he loved was in love with someone else without ever contacting her, Poppy, to see if it was true. He was a bit sickening with all of the crazy mistakes and lies he took to be the gospel truth. Can we say gullible??

I absolutely despised Kelly, Logan's lying conniving dead wife. She was pure evil!! End of story! She ruined Logan's life and that of her best friend, Poppy. Poppy and Logan had been in love forever and Kelly was on a course to ruin everything and they both let her. BLAH!!!!

After Logan finds out about the lies, deceit, trickery, and manipulations that his dead wife was responsible for he wants to make sure Poppy knows he still loves his dead wife (over and over and sickeningly over again) and always will because she gave him a son after she lied that she was pregnant to get him to marry her without any confirmation whatsoever! During the telling of this story it was plain and clear that Logan was unhappy in his marriage and was not in love with his wife. It was stated more than once that he had died inside long before she passed away. His life was zip without Poppy. But...don't forget he will love his dead wife forever because without her he would not have a son. So, let me see if I understand this mess.

To think that two people who were completely duped by a lying, conniving woman who is now dead can forgive her so easily after all the pain she caused is beyond believable. Not only that, then they both profess to love her? Really?

Poppy and Logan fell in love as teenagers but were torn apart when Poppy's parents decided to move to New York.

For some reason, Logan never forgave Poppy for abandoning him. Since it was not Poppy's idea to move out, it seems unfair right from the get go.

Now Poppy's back, to help Logan after a devastating flood and to reveal deep secrets held by Logan's dead wife, Kelly.

I believe that after a flood, a young able-bodied woman might be some help to a farmer. Poppy is restricted to nanny duties for Logan's four year old son (and even that is farmed out half of the time to let the adults have some grown-up sex), washing dishes, cooking and having fun in mud. Farmers's wives everywhere should be insulted as their contributions are far more reaching and involved.

SPOILER ALERT

As for Logan, he stroke me as a naive fool, willing to abandon his plans upon the words of one woman without thinking once she might lie. Really, got drunk, does not remember having sex, being told she's pregnant as a result, does not even think about being shown a pregnancy test and gets married ? At this point, I thought I was reading a Regency novel...

I read the book till the end but really, it was not worth the time.

When I read the reviews, I was excited about trying a new author. This book had wrong word uses, grammatical errors and even a wrong name in one spot. Poor editing is really a major let down when reading a book. On top of that, there was absolutely no heat in the sex scenes and the author was VERY repetitive in her writing style. There has to be more to a book than just saying the same thing in a different way. Will not buy any more of her books.

Other reviewers have described the plot so I won't repeat it. For 99 cents, this was an okay read. If I had paid more, I would have rated lower because the story was rather short and predictable. It takes place over the course of 3-4 days so there is not much character development. The entire plot hinges on the revelation of Kelly's big secret which the author keeps Logan from learning until nearly the end of the book. Given the questions plaguing him, I found it unrealistic for Logan to wait so long for the answers. There is no waiting for sex though as the leads are hopping into bed with each other by the second day.

Her Dakota Man By Lisa Mondello
Dakota Hearts Series Book 1
Poppy Ericksen left everything she had ever known when her parents moved the family from Rudolph, South Dakota to New York. She also left her friends and her heart. A heart that splintered into a million pieces when the man she loved married her best friend instead of coming for her as promised. Ten years later she returns to make sure he knows the truth of their past. And hoping that somehow she can still have a future with him.

Logan McKinnon has been angry at Poppy for ten years. First for moving on without him and then for pulling her friendship away. She didn't even come to Kelly's funeral. His wife and her best friend. But what is worse is that he realizes that ten years apart did nothing to erase what he feels for her. And that only adds to the guilt he has been carrying for so long.

The first of the McKinnon stories brings the reader to a small town that has been devastated by a storm. Two people have to face a past that has been shrouded in lies. We get to meet Logan's twin brother Ethan and his brother Hawk. Their stories are yet to come. I loved the story and the characters. It tugged on my emotions both with humor and a few teary moments. Looking forward to the next three books in this series.
