To start, I think the author has written a novel that has very good potential. However, I did have enough issues with it that I could not finish it.
In short, this debut novel could well do with some more in depth, fleshing out of information in the beginning of the book to make it easier to imagine the characters and locations, creating a clearer picture in the readers mind.
I found it difficult to follow as the plot and chapters jumped around a lot without enough depth to follow what is happening. First, I'd like to know a little more about the main character, Monica. Perhaps some details about what and where she teaches and more about her life growing up with her father would help to solidify the basis of the story before getting into the crime investigation itself. More information in general such as the in's and out's of the father's business that was run out of the house would help, too. Further, It needs quite a lot more proofing and editing. Having said that, it could already be going through another editing process.
What I liked.
The author has a good concept of a complicated plot with interesting characters. It has all the makings of a very good book. I like that it's set in the outback and not in a city like so many other mysteries and suspense novels.
While I have given this book a low rating, it should be noted that it could be because this is simply not my kind of book and that it may be enjoyed greatly by other readers. In the end, I'd like to say that you should read it for yourself and come to your own conclusions.
There’s a lot I liked about this book. It’s fast paced, the characters are interesting, and I enjoyed how the story moved between present and past, weaving both stories together. I always enjoy some mystery and subterfuge! However I wasn’t sure if I really believed a detective would become so involved with protecting a victim of attempted murder, or that so many people would sacrifice so much. Putting that aside, it was a very enjoyable read, and the storyline was certainly a little different!
I have to add that, of course, I read previous reviews and it seems a little unfair that someone can leave a review with one star having been given the book to read and then did not read it, admitting it was not "their kind of book".
Monica bravely paves the way to find out what the mystery of the Australian Special Forces black-ops, the Ubantamia Tribe of Africa, diamond mines, and the British all have in common. We get a hint at the end that there will be another book coming, which is a good thing for the readers of this new author. I can see this author gathering faithful fans.
