I felt a lot was left hanging at the end. If anyone deserved a happy ending, Sophie/Harriet did, and unless there is a sequel, she didn't get it. It was hard to understand her panic attacks. Were they from her childhood, or her disastrous marriage? What happened to Andrew's ex? Was she behind all the strange happenings surrounding Sophie? It seemed that Sophie just accepted her fate, and may have been relieved, but it didn't seem she really made any progress, because Andrew was there for her, but she ignored him. Julia could have helped her, too, but Sophie wouldn't let her. It is doubtful she got "well" at all.

This book will grab you from the first to the last page. Harriet is very frightened of her abusive husband, but no one knows he's abusive. Like most abusers he can become a different person around other people, put the simmering rage on the backburner until they leave and unleash everything at the exact moment they're gone.
Sophie has lived across the hall from Dan and Harriet for a little while. She noticed Harriet come home with Dan and her lip is bleeding profusely. Dan tells her some half cocked story about how clumsy Harriet is and just sweet talks Sophie. That night Sophie watches as Harriet leaves with a suitcase and doesn't understand how she could leave a sweet and loving man.
Read this book to find out everything that happens next. You will not be disappointed, but be prepared for a wild rollercoaster ride!

Ms. Harrow’s debut novel was a great read with an exciting twist. I didn’t see the surprise coming. When it was revealed, it knocked me back in my chair. Unbelievable! The author did a terrific job storytelling. The suspense was well presented. The plot flowed nice & easy to its conclusion. The writing was tightly woven and quite polished for a first-time author. The characters were believable & they moved through the novel as they would in real life. There were a few typos but all in all, the editing was very good. As far as Sophie goes, I disliked her greatly. I thought she was an awful human being, always trying to justify her life choices by blaming other people.
The reader will make a good decision in purchasing this novel.

This story is packed with twists and turns, the reader never knows what will happen next. Central to the story are Dan, a raging wife abuser, and Harriet, the abused wife. Dan only beats Harriet when she disappoints him, but she disappoints him almost every day. Enter Sophie, who assumes Harriet’s identity, and Andrew, the fake Harriet’s boyfriend. Each page enlarges the story and the problems. I couldn’t wait to see how these characters lived their lives.

At first I was caught into the story but as I got more into the story and it switch from the story of Harriet to Sophia I was very confused for awhile because even when you started going more into the chapters who was telling it was at the top I think once the reader got to the chapter of Sophia talking it should have said her name at the top just my opinion...But the book was GREAT...

What happened to the missing picture? Did the customer ever get her completed painting? Why was Sally at the sandwich shop so antagonistic towards the painter? Why did Andrew and his ex-wife get divorced in the first place?

Andrew was too nice, too good to be true and I didn't warm to him at all - plus openly courting a woman over the road from your ex-wife's shop was cruel, particularly as she obviously still held a torch for him. Dan the villain was like a cartoon character, and I'm not downplaying domestic violence here.

I felt the final chapter was too rushed and it was as if the writer got bored of her story and wanted to wrap it up as quickly as possible with so much left unexplained.

However, I will be reading more by Ruth, in the hope that I can leave a more favourable review next time.

The story starts off with Harriet and how her life is with Dan. Dan is a control freak when it comes to Harriet and she lives in constant fear of making sure that she does everything just right as she can't bear to think about what punishment he will dish out if she doesn't. There is no wonder she wants to get away from someone so abusive and I was willing her to get out as soon as she could.

The only problem with leaving your past behind, you never really can. Harriet is happy and settled in her new life but there is that constant fear that her past will catch back up with her. Her paranoia starts to affect her new life in lots of ways and sadly they arn't for the better.

There is a build up of suspense and tension right from the off with this story. It's hard for me to say too much as I don't want to give any of the plot away and ruin any surprises for new readers. There is definitely without a doubt an unexpected twist that I would never have guessed though I have to say there were some things that puzzled me prior to it that suddenly made sense.

In Her Foosteps had me hooked from start to finish. Perfect read for lovers of psychological thrillers.

I don't want to give away the plot and spoil a really good read.... but I was hooked in to Harriet's life right from the start. she lives with Dan, a very controlling and abusive husband... but she vows to leave him when she has enough money stashed away. but one night Dan attacks her while in such a rage that, fearing for her life, she manages to leave sooner than planned. the story started to become a little gentle and slow, lulling the reader, but suddenly we are hit with the most amazing, unexpected twist just over halfway through the novel..... and from then on the pace is so fast that I just couldn't read fast enough!

A great debut novel. I'll definately watch out for more from Ruth Harrow in the future.

A good debut novel by Ruth Harrow who has the makings of being a psychological thriller writer to watch. Written in the first person and revealing the story of Harriet who leaves her abusive husband to travel from London to the Midlands and set up an art shop in Coventry. In the early chapters I feel the point about leaving her husband was laboured and it dragged a bit, as did the early dating experience with Andrew. I am sure Ruth will learn from this first novel and move a story along swifter and with more hidden dangers, the psychological fiction reader needs to be gripped, page after page, ever wondering why, when, what if, how, be careful and so on. Good wishes for her next novel, I will look out for it.
