The discussion questions hit so differently as I finally sit with the Holy Spirit to get to the root of my issues. This book is a TIMELY resource and I’m thankful for Joy and Juli. In my opinion, this is good even for women who don’t think they struggle with sexual sin. The questions help to sift through the surface-level info and cause you to dig deeper. So thankful for voices like Joy & Juli who help remind women like you and me that we are not alone! We are all sexually broken...and we can take our brokenness and desires to the Healer. Healing is possible but indeed it is a *journey* This workbook style guide is a great blend of teaching, practical application, and reflection and is a great resource to go through together in a community. Say the s*x word, say the p**n word, come out of hiding, confessing your sin and digging to the deeper issues, as these sin struggles are not the biggest issue...intimacy and pursuing Christ and drawing close is.

Her Freedom Journey by Dr. Juli Slattery and Dr. Joy Skarka is not just a book but offers an 8-week guide divided into four days each week of teaching along with reflection questions and challenges for women caught in the snare of pornography, those who can’t seem to shake the temptation of the shame of sexual sin.

One of the authors, Joy, shares her first exposure to pornography came in the fifth grade when a friend from summer camp pulled up images on her laptop on her desk in the bedroom. Then on her first day of college Joy was date raped. Both of these were snares holding her in a trap that offered a way out of pain and shame, tempting her to return to them again and again in ways she would never have imagined she would choose

Her Freedom Journey by Dr. Juli Slattery and Dr. Joy Skarka is not just a book but offers an 8-week guide divided into four days each week of teaching along with reflection questions and challenges for women caught in the snare of pornography, those who can’t seem to shake the temptation of the shame of sexual sin.

You hear of these challenges facing men more often but in the small print you discover that one out of three visitors to adult websites are women. Many of these women are first exposed to pornography at a very young age. The average age of the struggle begins at 12 but that is the average so some see what they cannot unsee even earlier.

Her Freedom Journey helps identify and address the problems beneath sexual sins, those we keep hidden out of fear and shame. The book is structured into eight chapters: The Problem of Pain, Can God’s Love Really Be Enough?, A New Vision for Sexual Wholeness, Pursuing Sexual Integrity, Ditching Lies and Embracing Truth, Stop Trying So Hard!, Getting Unstuck from Shame, and When Your Story Becomes Your Weapon. It is crafted to be used in group settings where you can gain support for the battle but can be helpful for an individual to start on the path.

I'm very thankful for this book. I'm a pastor and have written a book on freedom from porn and sexual sin for men. I love having a fantastic resource for women that I can refer women to, as I get asked this question a lot.

This book goes deeper than "just porn" as well. This is going to be a great resource for women of all walks of life, helping them grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

When addressing a topic like this, every element of the book must be disarming, welcoming and relational. Juli and Joy have done a great job helping the reader find hope, feel valued and loved. It feels like you have friends coming alongside you to point you to Jesus, helping you to change your perspectives and guiding you toward healing and restoration. They've obviously spent a lot of time being intentional in the content, the design and the questions to make this book an amazing resources. Even if this is not an area that you struggle with (male or female), you should still read this and have it on your shelf ready to share with others.

This book and its workbook style format really helped me think through the why of my struggle. The book clearly pointed out the needs I had mistakenly met with erotica (my porn of choice before I had turned to further sexual sin). In the chapter on lies I realized I’d never trusted God to meet my needs on the deeper level I needed to become whole. The book is never condescending or heavy handed - it’s all backed with scripture and such a loving, understanding tone of writing. Joy and Juli clearly set out to walk the reader slowly and with care into the freedom our Savior provides when we seek Him for our intimacy first. Highly recommend for any woman who has been exposed or shackled by porn and sexual shame. You are not alone and God is ready to guide you to freedom through a book like this!
