Review

"A delightfully light-hearted romance about finding love again." -- Powell's Books

"Anne Marie is a delightful lead protagonist and the mysterious Giovanni will turn a heart or two..." -- Harriet Klausner On Line Review May 2003

About the Author

Carol Grace has written over twenty-five romance novels since 1989. Before that she worked in public TV doing promos for Julia Child (in French); then she sailed the world aboard the hospital ship Hope as a translator. Besides French, she has studied Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi, and she has taught in Iran and Algeria. After a lifetime of dreaming of Italy, listening to Italian opera, and watching movies like Roman Holiday, Carol was finally able to take a dream vacation on the spectacular Amalfi coast of Italy. Inspired by the warm, hospitable people, the luscious scenery and food, and the romantic atmosphere, she decided to set her next book, That's Amore, there. Carol lives on a mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean with her husband, and she has a son in college and a daughter in law school.

I love Carol Grace's stories and have eagerly read many. This wasn't my favorite, but not as other reviewers have written, because it is "poorly crafted" or too "predictable." I don't expect this kind of book to be a literary masterpiece and I didn't mind that I guessed part of the mystery. The point of the story wasn't the mystery, but the romance. It was still a fun read and the story was very engaging. I do agree with another reviewer who said this is "sexier than all the other Carol Grace books"...at least the ones I have read. I wish they had been less cryptic so I'll spell it out to help others know what to expect: there are a couple of sex scenes and the author gives some graphic details.

Firstly I have to say that the title was very misleading because Marco is an undercover agent and whether or not he has millions is completely irrelevant to the story. The plot was very predictable - as some of the other reviewers have said, I guessed where the diamond was very early in the story. It was ridiculous that Marco could not have figured that out until the very last moment, especially since he is an experienced agent and has probably seen criminals try all kinds of ruses before.

Anne was annoying for being so incredibly naive and, as another reviewer mentioned, crying at the drop of a hat. She sounded so immature she could have been 18! The writing in general was stilted and didn't captivate me or draw me into the story. Nothing I read made me care about either Anne or Marco, especially because they lived so much in their own heads. I didn't sense any chemistry between the two of them; the emotions didn't come through in the writing. For once I didn't even care whether the couple would get a HEA! (But it is a romance, of course they do).

I loved this book and have read it twice. This two star instead of five star review is because of the fact that the first time I read this book (in paperback form, which I still own) it was called That's Amore and was published in 2003. I wanted to have it on my Kindle and have been looking for it as That's Amore for some time. I came upon this title (Her Italian Billionaire) by accident while looking for Carol Grace on Amazon. When I read and recognized the descriptive blurb I immediately bought it and have just finished reading it and find that it is indeed the exact same book. There are one or two added sentences in the middle of the book and two or three added sentences at the end indicating that the main male character was rich, but certainly not a billionaire. This "new" version says at the beginning that it is copyrighted in 2014. Maybe it's just me, but this seems to be very dishonest to market an old book as a new one with a different title (which title is not nearly as good as the old one) without at least stating that fact. I'm very disappointed in Carol Grace and probably won't be buying anymore of her books.

I've only read one other book by Ms. Grace, which I really enjoyed. So I looked forward to another one of her books.

This story was not well written. I don't usually complain too much about a typo here and there but this story suffered from gross misspellings, double sentences, and was just so repetitive! It was almost as if this book was put out just to attach the previews of other books at the end. A good editor would have been highly appreciated.

My other problem with the book is more of a personal taste matter. The two sex scenes in the book. They didn't add to the story whatsoever. I personally don't like sex scenes but at least make them make sense in the story. I felt like they were thrown in because the writer needed to fill in. While other reviewers talked about the scenes being graphic I didn't see that in fact Ms. Grace pretty much glossed over them. Maybe they had an earlier version of the story. Which is another reason why I felt they really didn't need to be in the story.

I plan on giving Ms. Grace 's work another chance because she is a good writer I just don't think this book truly shows her talent.

This story seems to have been written as the ideas came to the author. There is the hope of a meeting, the expectation of finding a long lost love, but this fizzles so undramatically. But that is just one of the of the anticlimactic points of this book. There is a building up of feelings between the two main characters, but it is so drawn out that by the time they connect, you are not even that interested any more. Add to that the internal dialogue that meanders on, giving no real insight to the characters, just showing the musings of the writer, and you understand why I was squirming halfway through, just plodding on in stubbon determination to fininsh the meal in front of me like my mother made me when I was young. The fact that the main male character is a millionaire is a revelation made in the last two pages of the book, just as a afterthought, so that it could be mentioned in the title perhaps.
Painful, long, unexciting. There are more twists and turns in the business section of the newspaper, maybe you could give that a read instead, save yourself some frustration.
