“Burton’s latest romantic thriller takes inspiration from the true crime podcast sensation, weaving a story about a cold case that still holds deadly surprises. The narrative, which shifts from collected interviews regarding a fourteen-year-old murder and the current day murder spree it inspires, moves quickly and provides the reader with plenty of intriguing connections and building suspense…There is a good deal to enjoy here, particularly the richness of the two protagonists and their developing relationship.” —RT Book Reviews

The mystery was a bit juicer. It kept me reading but was a little dull in some places. I have to note I said “he did it” as soon as the murderer was introduced, but there was enough going on so that I was interested in reading until the end. Unfortunately this story ended with a whimper, not a bang. The climax was anti-climactic and there were a few loose ends. I also didn’t like how we were told what happened and not shown. It could’ve used another 20 pages to wrap things up more satisfactorily. As it was, I felt a bit let down and said really, that’s all I get? Oh well, not a total waste of time but I was hoping for better. I enjoy this author and have really liked some of her other books. This one just didn’t do it for me.
“Her Last Words” is a good police procedural and awesome who-done-it as there are lots of nasty suspects, and really likable police. The main character, Kaitlin, is strong and brave as an adult, but really messed up as a teen. The storyline is complex, and entertaining, but I was relieved when I was finished reading. This is the first time I can say buying a paperback would have given me the ability to thumb through the pages, and realize how much jumping around there is by date. It also shows how important the customer reviews are to other readers. I can say however, I still love ❤️ my Kindle and don’t regret buying and reading this story!
